Editor's Notes

  • #1: The first part of the course covers Windows configuration settings and management tools. While the focus is on Windows 10, make students aware of Windows 11. Many of the basic user and administration interfaces are the same in both versions.
  • #3: This topic focuses on user account and desktop settings plus use of File Explorer.
  • #4: If necessary, recap the main elements of the Windows interface. Students should be familiar with basic Windows operation (using the start menu and taskbar and managing desktop windows) but be prepared to demonstrate these procedures if students have no prior experience at all.
  • #5: Review the main UI changes introduced in Windows 11. Note that the left alignment of the taskbar can be reapplied by adjusting its properties.
  • #6: Explain that Settings is the newer touch-compatible interface. Note that there are some layout differences between Windows 10 and Windows 11.
  • #7: Explain that Control Panel is the legacy interface. Each feature update tends to move more configuration options from Control Panel to Settings.
  • #8: As you work through each configuration utility, focus on explaining what type of settings can be changed and why you might need to use it. Do not try to identify every individual option or sub-page. Note that we will be returning to the subject of user accounts and system privileges later in the course, so just give an overview of the settings available here.
  • #9: Note that these options are chosen when the account is created but can be reconfigured here.
  • #10: You shouldn’t need to go into detail but note the importance of setting the date/time correctly. Also explain the toggle where multiple input methods have been configured.
  • #11: Explain the importance of setting up assistive technologies for those that require them.
  • #12: File management isn’t a content example but do make sure students understand the organizational principles behind File Explorer, such as the local profile folders, local drives and folders, network locations, and integration with OneDrive. Stress the distinction between system objects and the underlying drives and directories. You might also want to discuss roaming profiles. Home folders and folder redirection are covered later in the course.
  • #13: You shouldn’t need to spend much time on this. Explain the concept of file extensions and make sure students know how to access these settings.
  • #14: Take some time at the end of each topic to answer questions. You can use the review questions for discussion in class or set them for students to complete individually during or after class.
  • #17: This topic collects the remaining content examples from objectives 1.4 and 1.5. These settings are focused on system/device configuration rather than per-user options.
  • #18: There’s obviously a lot of detail here that you could go into, but bear in mind the objectives document just lists “System” with no further expansion. You might want to revisit some of the options if you have time later in the course. You might want to note that the “classic” System applet is still present despite the best efforts of the latest feature updates (shell:::{bb06c0e4-d293-4f75-8a90-cb05b6477eee}). The quick route to advanced system properties is “control sysdm.cpl”
  • #19: Explain the importance of checking that updates are being applied. Anti-malware and firewall will be covered in more detail later, so do not spend too much time here.
  • #20: Device options are scattered between several management tools and pages so help students understand how to navigate them.
  • #21: Display settings aren’t a content example, but are probably worth covering. If you can demonstrate configuration of audio devices and multiple displays that will be useful for the students.
  • #22: Explain the different power saving states, noting the difference between full hibernation and hybrid sleep plus Modern Standby.
  • #23: Explain the differences between types of installable software and note the two interfaces for managing apps.
  • #24: Note that the Mail applet is only present if the Microsoft Outlook mail client is installed. User accounts can be linked to email profiles for other apps using the Accounts settings app.
  • #25: Network adapter configuration and sharing are covered in detail elsewhere in the course so do not spend too long here. The Internet Options dialog contains a huge amount of configuration complexity in terms of zones and security levels but as IE is obsolete it hardly seems worth spending time on it. If students are worried, possibly revisit it when discussing browser security later in the course.
  • #26: This page previews the tools we’ll be covering in the next lesson so you don’t need to go into the detail of each utility. Just contrast the use of management consoles with the simpler Settings app.
  • #27: This isn’t related to a specific content example (though students do need to know the .msc file names for given utilities) but make students aware of options and shortcuts that can help them to work more productively.
  • #28: Take some time at the end of each topic to answer questions. You can use the review questions for discussion in class or set them for students to complete individually during or after class.
  • #30: Try to include some time at the end of each lesson to check students' understanding and answer questions.
