Points to be kept in mind
 Do not spend more than 45 minutes on
question 1.
 Write the composition in approximately
400-450 words.
 Select a topic on which you have enough
matter to write.
 Your thoughts should be presented in a
coherent and an orderly manner.
 You are required to write in simple, clear
and grammatically correct sentences.
COMPOSITION
Points to be kept in mind
Marks will be deducted for spelling mistakes,
grammatical mistakes and punctuation errors.
In the descriptive and narrative essays, your
perspective must be that of a 17-18 year old person.
The matter that you write should be practical and
believable.
Do not end the composition in a dream.
Read the question/topic thoroughly. The essay will be
judged on the basis of relevance, content and
linguistic ability.
COMPOSITION
Points to be kept in mind
 A descriptive essay is appreciated when
the description appeals to the five sense
organs.
 A narrative essay is easy to write because
it is the narration of a sequence of events.
 The expository topic is usually a one
word topic. You can write anything
coming to your mind related to that topic.

Points to be kept in mind
 For the argumentative essay, make sure that
you have enough points to write either in favour
of the topic or against it. Do not mix up
arguments from both points of view. Include at
least four rational arguments to substantiate
your stand. Make your stand clear right in the
beginning of the essay and again in your
conclusion.
 For the reflective essay, you can discuss the
topic from all perspectives. Two or more view
points can be included in your essay.
COMPOSITION
Points to be kept in mind
 If you are attempting story writing, ensure that you write an
original short story. The story should not be plagiarized from
any book or film.
 According to the instruction of the question paper, you may
have to begin or end with a few words. You may also have to
write the story based on a particular theme.
 The words given in the question paper as the beginning or the
end of the composition must be copied exactly word for word.
Do not miss out any word or add any word or substitute one
word for another.
 A short story must have
 An appropriate plot
 A proper setting
 Proper characterization
 Meaningful dialogues
 A logical ending

DIRECTED WRITING
 This is a compulsory question. You will not
get a choice.
 Do not spend more than 55 minutes on Q2a
and Q2b
 Write the report in approximately 300 words.
 The piece of directed writing will be based on
the information and ideas provided.
 You are required to amplify or expand the
points given in the question paper.
 Do not add extra points even though it may be
written in the question that you can add more
points.
DIRECTED WRITING
Points to be kept in mind
 Every point given in the question paper should
be mentioned in the report/review.
 The points should be presented in an orderly
and coherent manner.
 You are required to write in simple, clear and
grammatically correct sentences.
 Marks will be deducted for spelling mistakes,
grammatical mistakes and punctuation errors.
 An ideal report should be written in indirect
speech and in the passive voice.
PROPOSAL WRITING
The Proposal should include:
 The Heading/Introduction
 Statement of objectives
 List of Measures
 Concluding sentence
 Date and name
Marks will be deducted for grammatical
errors and for not writing the subheadings
and the concluding sentence.
PROPOSAL – IMP POINTS

Most imp points to keep in mind
TITLE should be written on top
(PROPOSAL FOR....) (This does not carry
any mark)
This should be followed by
HEADING/INTRODUCTION
Here you are required to state the subject
of the proposal and introduce it mentioning
two points as to why it needs to be
done/organized

Here you are required to state two objectives of
the proposal
Remember that these objectives need to be
different from what you have written in the

LIST OF MEASURES
Remember only bullet points are accepted
DO NOT WRITE ALL THE MEASURES IN ONE
PARAGRAPH
Four measures are required as to how the
proposal will be put into effect
Do not write very long sentences
Do not write phrases
This accounts for four marks
PROPOSAL – IMP POINTS
This should be followed by a suitable concluding
sentence(I hope my proposal will be accepted
and....)
The concluding sentence carries one mark
and the remaining one mark is for language and
grammatical accuracy
Leave one line at the end of each section
At the end on the right side write the name and
designation of the person writing the proposal
The word limit for proposal writing is 150 words
FUNCTIONAL GRAMMAR
TRANSFORMATION OF SENTENCES - 05 marks
 There are five sentences to be transformed according to
the instructions given in the question. Each sentence
carries 1 mark.
 Make minimal changes.
 Do not change the meaning of the sentence.
 Retain the same tense except when you change from
direct to indirect speech.
 Pay attention to punctuation marks.
 Do not use contractions .
 Write only one answer-second answer will not be
marked.
 Study the rules thoroughly and practise comprehensively
and assiduously.
SOME EXAMPLES
Minimal changes
 The poem is so difficult that the students cannot understand it.
The poem is too difficult to be understood by the students.
 The poem is too difficult for the students to understand.
Tenses:
1. As soon as she saw her, she took to her heels.
No sooner did she see her than she took to her heels.
2. Although he had had his bath, he decided to go for a swim.
Despite having had his bath, he decided to go for a swim.
3. As the school did not have a tennis court, the students had to go
to a nearby stadium.
If the school had had a tennis court, the students would not have
had to go to a nearby stadium.
PREPOSITIONS - 5 marks
 There are 10 prepositions to be filled in the
blanks given in 10 sentences. Each preposition
carries half mark.
TENSES - 5 Marks
 There are 10 correct forms of the verbs to be
filled in the blanks given in a paragraph. Each
correct form of the verb carries half mark. Read
the entire passage to understand the correct
verb forms to be used.
FUNCTIONAL GRAMMAR
Points to be kept in mind:
 Do not spend more than 30 minutes on this
question.
 Number the answers properly according to the
numbering system of the question paper.
 Write the answers one after the other in the
correct order.
 Write only 1 answer because marks will not be
given for the 2nd or 3rd options that you write
even though they may be correct.

Points to be kept in mind
 Do not spend more than 50 minutes on this question.
 Three words will be given to you. For each word, you have
to find a word from the passage with a similar meaning.
 The word which you select should be in the same part of
speech, tense and number.
 Do not make spelling errors.
 For making a sentence, first analyze the meaning of the
word in the context of the passage. Then think of the other
meanings that the word may have. Make your sentence with
any other meaning of the word.
 Do not change the forms of the words.
 Do not use the words as proper nouns or compound
words.
 For answering the questions, retain the key words from the
passage.
COMPREHENSION AND PRECIS
Points to be kept in mind
 It is not compulsory to write a rough précis.
 For the fair précis, make a grid consisting of 5
columns and 20 rows.
 Include eight pertinent points.Write all the points
which you think are relevant but adhere to the word
limit.
 Write one word in each box.
 Write the number of words at the end.
 Avoid grammatical mistakes.
 Do not omit articles, prepositions etc. to lessen the
word count.
 Do not exceed the word limit by even a single word.
