PROBLEM SOLVING

CONTINGENCY PLAN
CONTINGENCY PLAN
EXPERIMENTS PLAN
My plan with my experiments is to get a variety of shots and get used to shooting with a camera. I
will book this equipment out over the next few weeks and go to certain locations including the
studio, Knaresborough Waterside to get a recce of the area and take a few practise shots. Pre existing
footage I shot for prior projects such as my FMP can be used before I go to these locations as I want
to invest a lot of my experiment time into learning the DaVinci resolve colour grading features as of
all the software and grading methods I’ve looked at seem to be inferior. Foley sound and music are
crucial to making my project so going out on separate days to film and get audio will also be
important as my project depends heavily on nature meaning appropriate sound is necessary.
THEORETICAL PROBLEMS
Learning the camera and how to focus and use the correct settings when
shooting makes or breaks my video so using experiment time to adjust
and get used to using my camera will be needed. I will do this In the
form of test shots in various types of lighting to better understand.
Unavailability of people will be solved through having backup actors at
the ready on set shooting days planned weeks in advance to ensure
availability. If I am unavailable to make it to one of my shooting locations
due to transport or other reasons I have made sure I have a number of
locations to film in. With use of the drone and insta360, I will have to rely
on outside sources to obtain the equipment resulting in higher risk for
problems as I cant sort it myself. In the event the drone wont fly or is
broken I will have to try and use the insta360s drone like capability.
THEORETICAL PROBLEMS
Prior projects have often been poorly organized personnel wise so I will insure I
knuckle down and understand where those issues have come from. In
comparison to my year 2 FMP, I have been given far more time to produce my
final piece of work so as much time as possible will be allocated to creating
that. Time management has been an issue in a lot of my projects to insuring I
go into planning with a solid plan and one I can fall back on if I end up being
behind would largely benefit me and means I wouldn’t have to be rushing to
meet the deadline at the end of the FMP. In starting this project, I found I had a
lack of direction in knowing where I wanted to take my project which has been
an issue for prior projects such as the factual and the music video in year 1. To
prevent this, I’ve made sure to research a broader topic in which is film to start
with and begin to move into a more niche topic and develop an idea which
would work well with what I want to create. Organizational planning has also
been an issue in which people or locations have suddenly become unavailable
meaning it has potentially delayed or completely changed plans on the spot
showing that I need to thoroughly plan my people, locations and availability of
my shoots in greater detail which is especially apparent when considering one
of my main locations for shooting is the lake district which we can't just show
up due to its distance away.
THEORETICAL PROBLEMS
The organizational planning may also link to issues that
would be on site while shooting such as job roles and
shooting time. These are both to be planned out and
distributed far before the initial shooting date in order
for the crew to prepare and potential offer opinions or
ideas which could be implemented into planning. The
finance of the project is to be managed by me the
director and any funds or money needed for food or to
access places will be handled by me but in the event, we
exceed our set budget on items such as props we will
have to either rethink or get creative and make them
before the shoot date with equipment we already have.
EXPERIMENTS
As referenced in my research plan I went down to waterside in
Knaresborough to use the camera in both high a low light
scenarios, This was in hopes of getting used to the camera off
auto focus which gets me time with the camera and therefore the
filming in the real location will become easier. During the filming
of my experiments, I found that often the camera was blurred or
out of focus due to either incorrect camera settings or personal
error which I then overcame by tinkering with the cameras setting
to put out a clear shot. I often found myself googling how to use
the camera and some of the best settings before I went out which
is the product of the short at the top. Using the low light and
outdoor setting on the camera put out a far better image than
using the settings that were already in use on the camera at the
time so changing that allowed for far better results. The aperture
on the camera was also significantly low when using the camera
for the first time so while I was adjusting to take the shot of the
flowers below I adjusted the camera to and framed the shot to
the left with a higher aperture to blur the trees in the
background. This when combined with the focus of the lens
EXPERIMENTS
Planning for inevitable noise pollution will be pivotal in
my project as the areas I wish to film in are renowned for
having a heavy breeze and lots of tourists. A method of
getting round this would be to select different areas to
film but in previous projects such as my year 1 FMP I
found that the product isn’t as satisfactory for the creator
knowing what you could have had so to work around it I
relayed some pre-existing foley sound I took in my
research tests and placed it over the top of the muted
footage which then silenced all noise apart from the
intended audio which still meant I could film wherever I
wanted. Gathering this audio was as simple as going
somewhere quiet and recording the sound around me
and making sure it was uninterrupted by-passing people
or traffic. Recording this audio was done on my phone
which wasn’t ideal as I wanted to book out the audio
recorders from college but luckily the iPhone mic did a
COLOUR GRADING TESTING
EXPERIMENTS
With the colour correction I followed a tutorial I saw on YouTube
about beginner colour grading and then began tweaking it to my
liking. I began by doing some basic correction to the shadows,
highlights and contrast to make the video pop. I then changed
the video encoding engines to the correct settings as they had
changed themselves. Then finally I added LUT filters and
rechanged the basic grading to produce the final product shown.
The time it took to learn the skill of colour grading was not one I
was expecting meaning it set me back significantly in my research
and problem-solving phases of my project. To overcome this, I
made sure to invest time into the colour grading at home and
spend my time in college working on the written aspects such as
contingency plans. Learning DaVinci has been a struggle in
general with it being a new software and a different interface to
that of premier pro so with using the software more and more I
could research more and develop my skill into a more
professional looking final product. The bottom shot was my first
attempt after looking through a tutorial and the top video is a
piece of practice footage after numerous attempts. The bottom
image looks far more flushed out while the top one appears to
have a far moodier and clearer outlook which is my intended style
for my video.
