The Learner’s Stages of
Development

GROWTH AND
DEVELOPMENT
• Growth
- is a change in a particular phase of the organism
- increase in size and weight
• Development
- is series of a number of related and continuous change in a
system, extending over a considerable time; especially
enduring and sustaining particular changes in an organism
from its origin to maturity and death
- progressive changes
The Learner’s Stages of
Development
• during this period all parts of
the human body such as the
internal organs, skeletal bones,
flesh, etc. are formed.
• the inherited characteristics
from the parents are also
imparted to the child during
this period.
Prenatal Period
(conception to birth)
• the baby begins
to learn the
rudiments from
right and wrong.
Infancy or Babyhood
(birth to two years)
• the pre-school age
• learns some social relationships and mixes
and plays with children of his age group
• child wants to explore
• can reach and asks too many questions.
Early Childhood
(2-6 years)
• elementary period
• learn things taught in
school such as reading,
writing, arithmetic, and
language, and social
studies
• learn what is right and
wrong
• begin to be interested
in the opposite sex
Late Childhood
6 to 12 years old
• high school period
• stage when the urge of
sex begins to assert
itself very rapidly
• man at this age is
already capable of
procreation
• girls start having their
monthly period
Puberty Stage
12 - 15 years
• middle high school period
• rapid sex maturation occurs
• some young people get married at this age
• voice, feelings and thinking continue changing
• start to develop their life ambitions and aspirations.
Early Adolescence
puberty to 17 years
• Students in college are now preparing for the
professional careers
• out of school are entering or finding jobs in preparation
for an independent life
• development of intellectual and social skills continues
Late Adolescence
18 to 21 years
• productive years
• new life adjustments occur such as courtship and marriage,
parenthood, employment, recreational hobby, religious affiliation
which may occur earlier, joining clubs, and years of achievement.
Early Adulthood
21 – 40 years
• Man or woman must have achieved most of his/her aspirations in
life such as a well-established home and family, stable and lucrative
employment or business, creative achievements even political
achievement
• Some physical and physiological functioning begin to decrease or
deteriorate. The preparation of retirement.
Middle Age
46 - 65 years
• period of retirement
• characteristics of old age occur, such as deafness, failing
eyesight, forgetfulness, baldness arthritis, senility, etc.
• painful adjustments have to be made to meet some
unavoidable circumstances such as death of spouse,
solitude as children now have their own homes or jobs in
far places, etc.
Old age
65 and above
As far as you can recall (or maybe you have
heard from your parents and relatives), write all
your qualities, abilities (can do/say),
weaknesses (can’t do/say), significant
experiences/information when you were:

- Being conceived up to the time you were born
- Born up to two (2) years old
- Three (3) to six (6) years old
- Seven (7) to ten (10) years old
- Twelve (11) to fourteen (14) years old
- Fifteen (15) to seventeen (17) years old
- Eighteen (18) to twenty-one (21) years old
- Twenty-two (22) to twenty-five (25) years old
- Twenty-six (26) to twenty-nine (29) years old
- Thirty (30) to thirty-three (33) years old
- Thirty-four (34) to thirty-seven (37) years old
- Thirty-eight (38) onwards
