This document summarizes research into using haptic feedback maps to help blind and visually impaired individuals develop spatial awareness and navigation skills. It describes tests of a Haptic RIA Maps application which allows users to explore web-based maps through haptic feedback. The tests found that both the Phantom and Falcon haptic devices had usability issues and unstable feedback. Alternative options like the Microsoft Haptic Mouse were proposed. Touch Over Maps was identified as a promising approach, but further work is needed to fully evaluate if these maps can help users develop useful cognitive maps.
