5 Themes of Geography Five important questions that help organize information about places Used to study geography and the role it plays in our lives Help us develop a “geographic perspective” of the world
5 Themes of Geography Location Place Human-Environment Interaction Region Movement
Location Absolute Location :  Latitude and Longitude describe where place is Relative Location : Location is described  in relation  to other places “ Where is it?”
Your Turn 1. What is the absolute location of San Diego? 2.  Write a sentence describing the relative  location of Santee.
Place “ What’s it like there?” Physical Characteristics : weather, land features, plants, animals Human Features : people that live in a place, cultures, ideas, ages, jobs, interests, etc.
Your Turn 1. Describe the physical and human  characteristics of West Hills.
Human - Environment Interaction “ How do people live within their environment?” Adapt : Do things to fit in-- clothing, foods, habits, housing Change :  Building parks, shopping malls, roads; Leveling land, making dams,irrigating
Your Turn 1. Give one example of how you have  adapted to your environment. 2. Give one example of how we have  changed our environment.
Region “What are some common characteristics about a place that we want to study?” The world is a big place-- we use region to help focus on specific things we want to study: Physical Cultural Political
Your Turn Name three regions in which you live. What are some regions we can use to describe the United States?
Movement “ How do people, goods, information, and beliefs move around in a place?” Think about : How do you get to school, parents get to work? Where does your food and clothing come from? How do people get information/communicate?
Your Turn Give one example of how people, goods, and information move in our society today.
Journal ___: If you could go any place in the world, where would you go?  Describe your place using the Five Themes of Geography, and make sure you tell me why you would go there!
Homework Illustrate and color your favorite place or hometown on the shield outline provided that incorporates the 5 themes of geography. Assignment due Monday.
