This document describes the Four Columns exercise, which is used to help individuals gain insight into what keeps them from making desired changes. [1] The exercise involves identifying a target behavior, then exploring competing commitments that prevent its realization through four columns: stated commitment, behaviors hindering change, competing commitments, and the "big assumption" underlying it all. [2] Coaches use this exercise to invite personal responsibility for growth by unearthing unconscious energies and assumptions. [3] The process involves autopsying an issue, filling out the four columns worksheet, exposing the core assumption, and creating a test and evaluation plan.
