Internet Searching a comprehensive introduction to web searching methods and techniques explains ways to find what you are actually looking for
Key Topics Overview of the World Wide Web Searching tools Queries/Keywords Tool selection Power search Evaluating the results
World Wide Web Internet is an inter-connected network of networks – www is the web virtually linking these networks most rely on Internet Searching for finding information billions of web pages at least a single page on your desired topic
Searching Tools Web directories / Virtual Library Search engines / Meta search engines Deep web databases
Web Directories repositories of useful web sites arranged into a hierarchical, subject-based structure hand picked by the professionals and classified according to that particular direcotory service – hence limited to the subject/topic provided by the service dir.yahoo.com, dmoz.org, dir.google.com
Virtual Library web directory that includes highly selective links mostly by librarians reviewed and evaluated by subject specialists for their accuracy and content lii.org, ipl.org, vlib.org
Search Engines index each document in its database when a query is posed, it matches the query against the records it has, to present a list of possible documents even the biggest search engines do not index all the Internet’s documents google.com, yahoo.com, teoma.com
Metasearch Engines send query simultaneously to several search engines, web directories and sometimes to the deep web remove the duplicate links and combine the results into a single merged list take only the top 10 or 20 from each search engine dogpile.com, vivisimo.com
Deep Web Databases invisible or hidden web databases not linked to by other pages – dynamic pages not indexed by standard search engines completeplanet.com – over 70,000 searchable databases http://elib.cs.berkeley.edu/ (digital library project – University of California, Berkeley)
Tool Selection distinctive word or phrase – search engines seek an overview – web directories facts, maps, datas – deep web switch from one tool to another
Phrase Searching an effective way to increase the relevance of "hits" is to search as a phrase “ internet training" is a different search than internet training in most search engines
Queries finding information on the Internet depends on using the keywords precisely and the search services effectively
Keywords fundamental aspects of a search nouns most often keep in mind the who , what , where , when , how and why in formulating the query avoid articles , pronouns , conjunctions or prepositions – also called “stop words”
Power Search overview of possible techniques boolean search field search
Boolean Search boolean logic and set theory simple to learn adds tremendous effectiveness boolean operators - AND , OR , and AND NOT “ boolean logic” AND “George Boole”
AND documents that contain all the words – dogs AND cats narrows a search can be used to chain a number of required terms or phrases – “sustainable development” AND mountain AND women
OR documents that contain either word – dogs OR cats broadens a search use to include synonyms - tutorial OR guide overuse can cause results sets to grow too large to be useful
AND NOT BUT NOT or NOT and denoted by minus sign ( - ) removes any documents that contain the term or phrase immediately after – training NOT ICT or training –ICT (note: no space between “–” and ICT )
Other Operators NEAR , BEFORE , AFTER not supported by major search engines all supported operators can be accessed via Advanced Search
Field Searching used from Advanced Search specify where to look your keyword in the web document – title, URL
Nesting search engines may get confused if we use something like – "pan pizza" AND coke OR icecream AND cheese but if we change to - "pan pizza" AND (coke OR icecream) AND cheese
Search Math exact form of word “ - ” excludes, “ + ” requires training –internet training +internet
Evaluating the Results anybody can publish on the web check: source – government agencies, eudcational institutions, libraries, prestigious publications/organisations cross check other sources as well updated date use your logic
Thank You there is no “ one ” way to search on the Internet
