The Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) converts wind energy to electrical power. Wind pressure (wind speed) on the cage blades cause the cage structure to rotate producing current flow and the associated voltage Vertical Axis Wind Generators may be easily installed in almost any location with good wind exposure. Connecting the VAWT to a power grid provides the option of selling power back to the utility company. Rebates are also offered in some countries / states. With the changes in the economy, the rising costs of fuel oil, and the rising prices of energy in general, there is an increasing demand for home generated power, be it from solar-electric, solar thermal heating, or wind generated power. Horizontal blade generators Horizontal generators are the type most people associate with a windmill or wind generator as they have blades that rotate perpendicular to the ground, with the axis of rotation being horizontal. While they have some advantages in efficiency they have disadvantages as well. Horizontal generators work best when they are put on a tall tower and can catch the upper contrail winds. Some of the disadvantages are that they are more mechanically complex. On top of this, they are also a hazard to birds, and can be quite noisy. When attempting to connect a horizontal generator to someone's home for net metered power generation, they can also run afoul of local zoning ordinances and home owners associations as well as making it difficult to receive approval for a 35 tall wind turbine. Installation: Vertical wind generators have the advantage of being suitable for a ground level installation. They can be installed in the middle of the back yard, or on top of the roof of your garage. They are much quieter in general than horizontal generators, and because they operate at a lower altitude, they are less likely to kill birds. They also do not need a yaw element (the 'tail' of a conventional turbine blade) to steer them into the wind direction, as they can generate energy from any wind direction the breeze is blowing in from. Vertical wind generators are also (generally) more aesthetic. Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Advantages: Lower construction costs because there is no need to build a massive tower structure as compared to other wind turbine systems. Reduced costs as rotor blades are vertical, eliminating "yaw" drives. Easier to maintain as moving parts are located nearer to the ground. Improved aerodynamics as VAWT’s have a higher airfoil pitch angle, while decreasing drag at low and high pressures. Up to 50% more energy than other wind turbine systems. Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Advantages: Lower wind startup speeds than other wind turbine systems. Typically, they start creating electricity at 6 m.p.h. Usually have a lower "Tip-Speed" ratio so less likely to break in high winds. Low height is useful where laws do not permit high structures. STATE REBATES California California now has the highest electricity rates of any State in the country. But, you can use the power in the wind to radically cut your electric bill and within a few years enjoy essentially free electricity. The best part is the State will pay for almost half of it! The State of California provides a cash rebate for qualified purchases of small wind systems up to 30 kW. The CEC (Cal. Financially, buying a home wind system is vastly superior to just purchasing all your electricity from the power company. It's like the difference between renting a home and buying a home. A small wind system will provide you with a return on your investment of 10 - 20% - tax-free - depending on your usage and wind resource. This is equivalent to a 14% - 28% return on a taxable investment! Compare that to 2% form a money market account, 5% from a long-term CD, or negative earnings from mutual funds over the last few years. Modest wind resources are fine for small wind systems. Wind resources are sufficient in many parts of California. STATE REBATES California New!  The California legislature has passed new regulations that should dramatically streamline the permitting of small wind turbine installations throughout rural California. The new regulations (passed under AB 1207) require wind turbine friendly zoning ordinances, providing relief from 35 ft. height restrictions and other historical barriers to permitting small wind turbines on lots on 1 acre and larger. CEC rebates are reserved on a first come, first served basis. Reservations, which are free and non-binding, last up to 6 months. STATE REBATES New Jersey Electricity rates in New Jersey are going up. Artificial caps on electrical rates will be removed in September 2003. Rates are expected to rise over 10% and maybe higher, and to skyrocket in the years ahead. But, you can protect yourself from future rate increases by producing your own electricity with a wind turbine system. The best part is the State will pay for over half of it! The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU), under its' Clean Energy Program, provides a 60% cash rebate for qualified purchases of small wind systems. Over its minimum 30 year operating life, a residential wind system in New Jersey will save 430,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, 3,000 pounds of sulfur dioxide, and 1,000 pounds of nitrogen dioxide that would have been produced by the utility's fossil fuel power plants. It is the equivalent of planting 2 acres of trees or taking 1.25 vehicles off the road. Modest wind resources are fine for small wind systems. Wind resources are sufficient in many parts of New Jersey. In some places they are excellent. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), now provides rebates of 50 - 70% for qualified purchases of small wind systems. The rebates are 50% for homes and institutions, 60% for farms, and 70% for schools incorporating wind energy in their curriculum. The NYSERDA rebates are only available through NYSERDA Eligible Installers.   • 3. The Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) converts wind energy to electrical power. Wind pressure (wind speed) on the cage blades cause the cage structure to rotate producing current flow and the associated voltage Vertical Axis Wind Generators may be easily installed in almost any location with good wind exposure. Connecting the VAWT to a power grid provides the option of selling power back to the utility company. Rebates are also offered in some countries / states. With the changes in the economy, the rising costs of fuel oil, and the rising prices of energy in general, there is an increasing demand for home generated power, be it from solar-electric, solar thermal heating, or wind generated power. Horizontal blade generators Horizontal generators are the type most people associate with a windmill or wind generator as they have blades that rotate perpendicular to the ground, with the axis of rotation being horizontal. While they have some advantages in efficiency they have disadvantages as well. Horizontal generators work best when they are put on a tall tower and can catch the upper contrail winds. Some of the disadvantages are that they are more mechanically complex. On top of this, they are also a hazard to birds, and can be quite noisy. When attempting to connect a horizontal generator to someone's home for net metered power generation, they can also run afoul of local zoning ordinances and home owners associations as well as making it difficult to receive approval for a 35 tall wind turbine.   • 7. Installation: Vertical wind generators have the advantage of being suitable for a ground level installation. They can be installed in the middle of the back yard, or on top of the roof of your garage. They are much quieter in general than horizontal generators, and because they operate at a lower altitude, they are less likely to kill birds. They also do not need a yaw element (the 'tail' of a conventional turbine blade) to steer them into the wind direction, as they can generate energy from any wind direction the breeze is blowing in from. Vertical wind generators are also (generally) more aesthetic.   • 9. Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Advantages: Lower construction costs because there is no need to build a massive tower structure as compared to other wind turbine systems. Reduced costs as rotor blades are vertical, eliminating "yaw" drives. Easier to maintain as moving parts are located nearer to the ground. Improved aerodynamics as VAWT’s have a higher airfoil pitch angle, while decreasing drag at low and high pressures. Up to 50% more energy than other wind turbine systems.   • 10. Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Advantages: Lower wind startup speeds than other wind turbine systems. Typically, they start creating electricity at 6 m.p.h. Usually have a lower "Tip-Speed" ratio so less likely to break in high winds. Low height is useful where laws do not permit high structures. The State of California provides a cash rebate for qualified purchases of small wind systems up to 30 kW. The CEC (Cal. STATE REBATES California New!  The California legislature has passed new regulations that should dramatically streamline the permitting of small wind turbine installations throughout rural California. The new regulations (passed under AB 1207) require wind turbine friendly zoning ordinances, providing relief from 35 ft. height restrictions and other historical barriers to permitting small wind turbines on lots on 1 acre and larger. CEC rebates are reserved on a first come, first served basis. Reservations, which are free and non-binding, last up to 6 months. Rates are expected to rise over 10% and maybe higher, and to skyrocket in the years ahead. The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU), under its' Clean Energy Program, provides a 60% cash rebate for qualified purchases of small wind systems.
