The Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) converts wind energy to electrical power. Horizontal blade generators Horizontal generators are the type most people associate with a windmill or wind generator as they have blades that rotate perpendicular to the ground, with the axis of rotation being horizontal. While they have some advantages in efficiency they have disadvantages as well. Horizontal generators work best when they are put on a tall tower and can catch the upper contrail winds. Some of the disadvantages are that they are more mechanically complex. On top of this, they are also a hazard to birds, and can be quite noisy. When attempting to connect a horizontal generator to someone's home for net metered power generation, they can also run afoul of local zoning ordinances and home owners associations as well as making it difficult to receive approval for a 35 tall wind turbine. Installation: Vertical wind generators have the advantage of being suitable for a ground level installation. They can be installed in the middle of the back yard, or on top of the roof of your garage. They are much quieter in general than horizontal generators, and because they operate at a lower altitude, they are less likely to kill birds. They also do not need a yaw element (the 'tail' of a conventional turbine blade) to steer them into the wind direction, as they can generate energy from any wind direction the breeze is blowing in from. Vertical wind generators are also (generally) more aesthetic. The new regulations (passed under AB 1207) require wind turbine friendly zoning ordinances, providing relief from 35 ft. height restrictions and other historical barriers to permitting small wind turbines on lots on 1 acre and larger. CEC rebates are reserved on a first come, first served basis. Reservations, which are free and non-binding, last up to 6 months.
