 A computer is a device that manipulates
data according to a set of instructions
called program.
 A computer can use any program to
carry out a wide range of useful tasks.
 Its purpose is to speed up problem
solving and increase productivity.
• The applications of computers are as follows :-
• Document typing:- computers are very helpful for word
processing. You can correct your mistakes with the help of
spell check and take out as many printouts as you like.
• Entertainment:- computer can be helpful in entertaining us
in many different ways:-
a} playing games:- you can play games on a computer that
help us to be attentive, observant and develop reasoning.
• General knowledge:- computers help us in refining our
general knowledge with the help of educational software,
explaining concepts through animation and multimedia.

 Computer is a very intelligent machine but it also suffers
from many limitations such as:-
1) Computers cannot interpret the data they generate.
2) Computers cannot detect if the operator feeds any
wrong data to it.
3) Computers cannot decide how they are to be
programmed or provide their own input.
4) computers cannot implement the decision that they
suggest.
• A computer performs :-
1) Accepts the data- input
2) Processes the data-
process
3) Provides results-
output
4) Stores result- storage
 After getting the input
,CPU processes the
mainly four functions
data and provides result as an
output.
OUTPUTPROCESSINPUT
 To perform these operations a computer requires
following units:-
1) Input unit
2) Processing unit
3) Output unit
4) Storage unit

 Super computer are those computer which are
designed for scientific job like whether forecasting
and artificial intelligence etc. They are fastest and
expensive. A super computer contains a number of
CPU which operate in parallel to make it faster. It
also known as grand father computer.
 Application – whether forecasting, weapons research
and development.
Mainframe computers are those computers that offer
faster processing and grater storage area. The word
“main frame” comes from the metal frames. It is also
known as Father computer.
 Application – Host computer, Central data base server.
These are also small general purpose system. They are
generally more powerful and most useful as compared to
micro computer. Mini computer are also known as mid
range computer or Child computer.
 Application :- Departmental systems, Network Servers,
work group system.
The most common types of computer is personal computer- a
personal computer that is designed to sit on a desk or table.
These are the systems you see all around you, in school,
homes, and office.
Today’s personal computers are more
powerful than those of just a few year’s ago. Not only do
these machine enable people to do their jobs with greater ease
and efficient, but they can be used to communicate, produce
music, edit photographs and videos, etc. the main components
of the personal computer is the system units.
 The clock speed is measured in megahertz and is the
main element in determining the speed of the
processor.
 Computer speed is also by the no. of instructions per
second.
 Hertz is the unit of frequency that measuresthe no. of
cycles per second in a periodic signal; a megahertz is
equal to one million hertz.
BINARY CONCEPT
 Computers cannot understand language that you
use in your daily life.
 It understands only machine language .
 Machine language is made up of a combination of
0s and 1s.
 The digits 0 and 1 are called binary digits and forms
binary codes.
 1 Bit = Binary Digit
8 Bits = 1 Byte
1024 Bytes = 1 KB (Kilo Byte)
1024 KB = 1 MB (Mega Byte)
1024 MB = 1 GB(Giga Byte)
1024 GB = 1 TB(Terra Byte)
1024 TB = 1 PB(Peta Byte)
1024 PB = 1 EB(Exa Byte)
1024 EB = 1 ZB(Zetta Byte)
1024 ZB = 1 YB (Yotta Byte)
1024 YB = 1 (Bronto Byte)
1024 Brontobyte = 1 (Geop Byte)
Geop Byte is The Highest Memory Measurement Unit!
