This document describes a computer-based approach for deriving knowledge structure from essay questions. Researchers had undergraduate students complete a multiple-choice exam and essay question after a management course. Essays were analyzed using natural language processing software to create network representations of students' knowledge structures. These computer-generated networks were compared to expert networks and human essay scores. The linear aggregation approach, which considered concepts across sentences, produced network representations that correlated better with human scores than the sentence-wise approach. This new approach provides an objective method for measuring individual and group knowledge structures from essays.
