THE
TETRAGRAMMATON
A simplified Old Testament Story part2 2
Moses protested, “If I go to the people of Israel
and tell them, ‘The God of your ancestors has
sent me to you,’ they will ask me, ‘What is his
name?’ Then what should I tell them?”
14 God replied to Moses, “I Am Who I Am. Say
this to the people of Israel: I Am has sent me to
you.”
Exodus 3:13-14
๏ In Hebrew, God’s name transliterates
to YHWH—the tetragrammaton—No
vowels in ancient Hebrew.
๏ Hard for us to know how to
pronounce.
๏ Translated as “Yahweh”
or “Jehovah”; most often as
“LORD” (all capitals). Why?
๏ From fear of blaspheming if reading
Scripture aloud Jews said Adonai
 (Lord) not the tetragrammaton.
๏ Over time the vowels from
Adonai / Elohim (God) were inserted
into YHWH, giving us YaHWeH.
๏ Some interpretations of YHWH
include:
๏ “He who will be, is, and has
been”
๏ “He Who Is”
๏ “He Brings into Existence
Whatever Exists”
๏ “I Am”

THELIFEOFMOSES
๏ Moses means ‘to draw or lift’, from
the Hebrew word masha
๏ Put into the Nile: Ex. 2:1-10
๏ Burning Bush: Ex. 2:23-4
๏ Encounters with Pharaoh: Ex. 5-12
๏ The Red Sea: Ex 14
๏ Wilderness: Ex. 15-18, Num 11ff
๏ The Law: Ex. 20
๏ A prophet, “And there has not arisen
a prophet since in Israel like Moses,
whom the Lord knew face to face”
๏ Died on Mount Nebo: Deut 34
Mount Nebo 3,636 m
A simplified Old Testament Story part2 2
Deut 34 Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab
to Mount Nebo…And the Lord showed him all the land…
And said to him, “This is the land of which I swore to
Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, ‘I will give it to your
offspring.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you
shall not go over there.” 5 So Moses the servant of the
Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the
word of the Lord…Moses was 120 years old when he
died. His eye was undimmed, and his vigor unabated.
10.THEEXODUS
Eventually, a new king came to
power in Egypt who knew nothing
about Joseph or what he had done.
Exodus 1:8
๏ The Israelites became slaves.
๏ Pharaoh ordered the male children
destroyed.
๏ Israel cries out to the Lord—after 430
years they walk free.

๏ Israel did not take the short route to
Canaan—about two weeks travel.
๏ They would have had to pass the
Egyptian wall (biblical Shur) that
protected the NE highways out of
Egypt. This wall was guarded and could
be passed only with great difficulty.
THEREDSEA
Which sea did they cross?
๏ Heb yam sup. Yam = sea, sup =
“reeds’ or “far away”
๏ Probably the northern tip of the
Red sea—some suggest a large lake.
G-D
Jews sometimes write G-d leaving out
to “o”
Deut. 12:4 means don’t erase, destroy
or desecrate the name of G-d.
This applies to seven names in Hebrew.
So, Jews try not to write it in places that
it could be erased or thrown out.
Jews have developed misspellings for
G-d's names—these can be erased etc.
Many Jewish organisations etc. put a -
instead of an “o”.
