A DISCIPLE is

someone who is following
Jesus, is being changed by
Jesus and is committed to
the mission of Jesus
Disciple-making is a
deliberate relationship in
which we walk alongside
other disciples,
…to encourage, equip
and challenge one
another in love to grow
toward maturity in
Christ.
This includes equipping
the disciple to make
disciples who make
disciples.

Jesus and
disciple-making
Imagine you are a
minister of the Gospel, a
servant of King Jesus…
This is not only pastors—
every follower of King
Jesus is a minister of the
Gospel
You are the salt of
the earth…

You are the light of
the world…

You will be my
witnesses…
If you knew you had only
3 years remaining in your
life and ministry and
there was no one to
replace you…
…what would be your
priorities for the next 3
years?

Jesus worked closely
with only 12 disciples for
two reasons
1. Internalisation:

Jesus and his message
had to become part of
them.
Disciple-Making: Internalisation and Multiplication
Jesus knew that this was
the best way to grow
people and make sure
His heart and vision
became theirs.
•The disciples had to know
Jesus and his mission—it
had to become part of them.

•Jesus did this by being
close to a few people with a
deliberate reason in mind.

Personal relationships
were the only way to
transplant Jesus’ heart
and mission into theirs.
We all, with unveiled faces, are
looking as in a mirror at, the glory
of the Lord and are being
transformed into the same image
from glory to glory; this is from the
Lord who is the Spirit.
Disciple-Making: Internalisation and Multiplication
Disciple-Making: Internalisation and Multiplication
Don’t copy the behavior and customs
of this world, but let God transform
you into a new person by changing
the way you think. Then you will learn
to know God’s will for you, which is
good and pleasing and perfect.
Disciple-Making: Internalisation and Multiplication
Put on your new nature, and
be renewed as you learn to
know your Creator and
become like him.

Colossians3:10
•Why not use the crowds?
•Being part of a crowd costs
nothing.
Disciple-Making: Internalisation and Multiplication
Disciple-Making: Internalisation and Multiplication
•Preaching and teaching won’t
make disciples!
•The sermon is forgotten usually within
48 hours. If they can’t remember it, what
are they supposed to do it?

•Disciple-making is a relational process!
Leroy Eims,

“Disciples cannot be mass produced. We
cannot drop people into a programme
and see disciples come out at the end of
the production line. It takes time and
personal attention to make disciples."
•Jesus did not write a book—or
dictate one (we might prefer it)

•He relied on the Holy Spirit and
the 12. His life was in them
through time, training and the
Holy Spirit.

dictate one (we might prefer it)

the 12. His life was in them
through time, training and the

Jesus le
ft
behind transformed
lives of ordinary people who
would carry on his work—it
had become part of them.
“When Buddha was dying his
disciples asked how best they
could remember him. He told them
not to bother; it was his teaching,
not his person that counted.
“When Buddha was dying his
disciples asked how best they
could remember him. He told them
not to bother; it was his teaching,
not his person that counted.
“With Jesus everything is di
ff
erent.
Everything centres on him, his
person. Discipleship means
knowing him, loving him, believing
in him, being committed to him.”
In Jesus the message was in
human form and could not be
separated from who he was.

Jesus developed people not by
a course, but by a shared life.
Mark 3:14

Then he appointed twelve of them
and called them his apostles. They
were to accompany him, and he
would send them out to preach,
15 giving them authority to cast out
demons.
•The disciples were just like the
people around them…ordinary
village people, no training, low
class jobs, no development of
their minds. They held no
positions of power or authority
in society, no education
“…they were ignorant,
narrow minded,
superstitious, full of Jewish
prejudices and animosities.
They needed to unlearn
what was bad, to learn what
was good, they were slow
at both.”
•The disciples were products
of their age.

•Your disciples will be products
of this age in which they live.
Don’t be too hard on them!
•The disciples were products
of their age.

•Your disciples will be products
of this age in which they live.
Don’t be too hard on them!
•For the 12 being with Jesus
for 3 years transformed them
into world changers

What would people gain
from 3 years with you?
Internalisation: Jesus
focussed on a few because
personal relationships was
the only way to transplant
his heart and mission into
theirs.
Has your life truly been
transformed by Jesus?
2. Multiplication: A
commitment to reproduce.

This is truly only possible
when the mission is
internalised and people are
motivated to pass it on.
5 “A farmer went out to
plant his seed. As he
scattered it across his
fi
eld…
11 “This is the meaning
of the parable: The seed
is God’s word…
13 The seeds on the rocky soil
represent those who hear the
message and receive it with joy.
But since they don’t have deep
roots, they believe for a while,
then they fall away when they
face temptation.
13 The seeds on the rocky soil
represent those who hear the
message and receive it with joy.
But since they don’t have deep
roots, they believe for a while,
then they fall away when they
face temptation.
14 The seeds that fell among the
thorns represent those who
hear the message, but all too
quickly the message is crowded
out by the cares and riches and
pleasures of this life. And so they
never grow into maturity.

thorns represent those who
hear the message, but all too
quickly the message is crowded
out by the cares and riches and
pleasures of this life. And so they
never grow into maturity.
15 And the seeds that fell on
the good soil represent
honest, good-hearted people
who hear God’s word, cling
to it, and patiently produce a
huge harvest.

•Big crowds
produce little depth.

•In Mark Jesus
spends about 50%
of his time with the
twelve.
•This increases to 90%
as he turns towards
Jerusalem and the cross.
•Jesus multiplied his life
into the 12 so that there
would be more of himself
to go round!
“By investing in a few, Jesus
intended to transfer his life to
others so they would take part
in extending his redemption life
to others”
•What do you need to change
to see multiplication
happen?

•What does your pastor need
to change?
Multiplication: is truly only
possible when the mission
is internalised and people
are motivated to pass it on
Are you truly committed
to disciple-making
multiplication?

2. Multiplication
