An outside independent evaluator is contracted to conduct program evaluation utilizing standardized, valid and reliable measures: Clean Slate involved 1,114 middle school youth from Los Angeles County, California. High school youth: 986 A 35-item questionnaire, including three demographic items, was administered before the start of the program (pre-test) and a 40-item questionnaire was administered at the end of the program (post-test). High school: 38/43 questions. The changes from pre-test to post-test are from the same group of students who participated in the program. “ Strongly Agree”, “Agree” and “Somewhat Agree” responses were collapsed into a single category of total responses for both pre-test and post-test and represented as a percentage shift. - 17. Reasons to Support Clean SLATE We’ve educated 14,097 students in risk avoidance since December 2008. We’ve partnered with over 18 schools and organizations. We’ve equipped nearly 1,600 parents with communication tools.

- #3: Our mission here at Clean SLATE The South Los Angeles Teen E-initiative is to offer teens the skills, tools, and knowledge so they are able to prevent HIV/AIDS, STI’s and premature pregnancy. In order for them to be successful by avoiding risky behaviors and making healthy choices.

- #6: In 2007 it was reported that more than one million youths in California have sexually transmitted diseases that cost the state more than $1 billion a year in treatment. Nearly one third of all these cases were in Los Angeles County. Health experts are especially worried that rates of HIV infection are growing fastest among younger age groups and minorities.
- #7: That’s where we come in… In order to effectively reach the youth of Los Angeles County with tools and information to make healthy decisions, we offer the following services:
- #8: The two pillars of Clean SLATE education are: risk factors and character. Teens need to clearly know about the very real threats to their health, their future goals and their lives posed by uncommitted sex and other risky behaviors. On the other hand, Clean SLATE challenges youth to aim for high ideals of mature love, an unselfish concern for others, commitment, and faithful marriage. We seek to increase their “locus of control,” which is their awareness that their personal choices will have great impact on their future lives. We also seek to increase their focus on their future goals or future orientation, their conviction that abstinence really is the best choice (Affirmation of Abstinence), to encourage them to avoid situations where there is likely to be an opportunity to have sex, to build their independence from negative peer values and confidence to practice abstinence behavior of lifestyle (self-efficacy).
- #9: At the weekly club meetings, youth receive more abstinence and relationship education and discussions, go on outings and activities, perform community service, receive various types of media education and also receive training in how to raise and use money responsibly.

- #12: Most of the kids we reach in the classrooms and all of our club members choice to make the promise or pledge to abstain from sex. So even when we loose we win. Those that made that pledge delay having sex an average of 27 months than teens who don ’ t make a pledge. Teens who abstain from sex are much more likely to graduate from high school, to graduate from college, and have much higher incomes than teens who don ’ t abstain.
