Editor's Notes

  • #3: First and foremost, Alfresco ECM product provides the ability preserve and record important, critical files – what we refer to as ‘content that matters to you’. This can range in a variety of formats and use cases, being accessible enough for small agencies, and providing a enterprise class platform for large government entities. Some themes that are prevalent for us are obviously open source, as well as open standards, allowing adoption of the product to be very pervasive, but not interrupting the way users tend to work. This means multi-platform and from anywhere. This makes us ahead of the curve in terms of mobility, security, and platform independence. This helps to set the scene. Points to make:Alfresco will help companies manage the content that is important to them, content that is used to run the business. Alfresco help companies manage Precious Content – use the examples of the New York Philharmonic and Martin Luther King as example of precious content.Introduce the idea that we allow users to securely access content from anywhere and on any device. NGIC TERRORIST BIOMETRIC DATA SUPPORTING WAR FIGHTERS WHILE THEY ARE OUT PERFORMING THEIR GROND MISSION IN AFGHANISTAN, FIGHTING THE WAR ON TERROR. THIS IS CONTENT THAT MATTERS TO SAVE OUR LIVESODNI ANALYST REPORTS ON SECURED NETWORKS, SHARING AMONGST DIFFERENT DOD AND INTEL COMMUNITY FOR RECENT EVENTS AND ACTIVITY SUCH AS SYRIA
  • #4: Does your current document management system look like this or atleast feels like this when you need to find one? In my day to day with customers, I feel as if this is what many deal with, at least in my mind. This of course probes the questions around the ability to find the necessary information quickly, ensuring that it is carefully managed to prevent onlookers and also able to collaborate on it safely with people who can.More than likely, these paper files probably were part of a process in which it was reviewed by a board or other supervisory roles, and this is how they end up capturing and preserving the files. Many enterprises still operate in this fashion but with electronic documents. This is a representation of your current document management systems: sharepoint, file servers, FTP servers, databases. However, our goal is to let agencies start to feel warm and fuzzy.
  • #5: A good enterprise content management system can help you clean it up, and establish order. This will ultimately improve decision making, support the business, and meet less resistance with the users. In fact, we play key roles in the paper to digital process, too.
  • #6: If we refer back to my introduction, we touched upon content that matters to you and allowing the customers to perform and do great work. Our government mission thematically is the same, but we do want to concentrate on what matters to the agencies today such as cloud, open source, security and cost effectiveness. Commercial Open Source allows this mission to be accomplished and provides tools that many agencies couldn’t deploy due to fiscal issues with other proprietary products.
  • #7: Already, many government agencies are already feeling the relief by being more organized leveraging alfresco. A few of them are listed here, but this is not a full representation. Just to name a few, the national archives responsible for the electronic records of the executive office of the president is currently using Alfresco for FOIA request and archive retrieval for George W, Bush administration records.ARMY ACCESSIONS COMMAND, managing the recruitment and onboarding process documents using AlfrescoAs well as healthcare oriented agencies like CMS, leveraging Alfresco as a unstructured file platform for citizen services. These customers are adopting Alfresco, and most importantly are adopting Commercial Open Source products and benefiting greatly from the decision. These statistics are a testament to Alfrescos strength and commitment to our customers.Points to make:Some of the largest companies are using Alfresco – The majority of customers are large with over 10,000 employeesWe have global reach – with customers in 75 countriesThe customer base is spread across commercial companies, government organizations and the educations sectorCompanies value the support services – with a renewal rate greater than 90% - companies are committed to using Alfresco for business critical applications<NEED TO ADD ONE LINE FOR EACH COMPANY ON THE LIST> <TWO VERSIONS – ONE FOR US AND ONE FOR EMEA>
  • #8: Alfresco originally had a goal to disrupt the ECM market by launching our open source product with the availability of commercial open source subscription. The commericaloepn source option provides for alleviating a lot of the up front perceived risks with open source projects. And over the last 7 years, we’ve clearly shown that we have disrupted ECM, and are making a tremendous impact globally across 75 different countries.I do want to make a mention our community. Any company today is often measured by the strength and activity levels of the community around the product. For an Open Source company, this is a prime indicator. For us, its clear and evident that our community engages us, as well as each other through collaborating on alfresco projects, using the internet and social coding to provide extensions, modules and tips with each other. I do want to point out that our community of users includes customers, partners, hobbyists, and developers. We are all helping to provide a better product for ECM.Alfresco was founded in 2005 with the goal of disrupting the ECM market. We did this by launching a new open source business and providing a commercial open source ECM subscription. Over the last 7 years we have been very successful We have over 2300 enterprise customers – customers who realize the value of support and no need to pay for licenses We know from the heart beat data that there are over 6.6 million users using Alfresco on a regular bases. Are they are using Alfresco The community is important. It helps improve Alfresco (by having more users using the software, reporting issues and submitting fixes). The community build extensions to the product
  • #9: Since we are open source, its fair to mention some of our own contributions. it is obligatory that our own engineering team are members are contributors to other open source projects. As you may learn today, Alfresco is an open source product built using other open source tools and libraries. Our own contributions come in the form of Activit, BPM engine, which is a apache licensed and allows application developers to incorporate this into their own applications. Alfresco is probably the biggest Activiti customer, user, and community contributor to date.Other projects we’ve embedded and contributed to include: lucene and solr, which we use for searching and indexing content stored in Alfresco. Apache TIKA which provides metadata and metadata extraction. Also, Postgres, mysql and libre office, amongst many more.
  • #10: We also saw a need to contribute to other products as well. I’d like to bring to light a few modules that Alfrescans have contributed to the drupal community. Primarily, we have seen a lot of customers needing integrations for the two products as they both had strengths in different areas. One of many ways to start bridging the two is leveraging an open standard called: CMIS. CMIS stands for content management interoperability services, and the long term vision is that this specification will server as a similar standard as ANSI-SQL is to the relational database world. So, several folks contributed a base CMIS API for drupal. This basically is a client API for drupal to interface directly with CMIS compliant respositories, such as Alfresco. This gives drupal developers a common API to work directly with repository content management systems and work with content. Since this is a client API – the way drupal developers can leverage this is endless – actual web page assets, document management in drupal, request for information workflows, and external submissions.
  • #11: Another drupal contribution is the CMIS Views module which actually a presentation module for drupal that uses cmis queries to populate a page in drupal. This was originally devecloped by an Alfresco drupal developer who maintains many of our own web properties such as: alfresco.com, partners.alfresco.com, addons.alfresco.com and several others. Ultimately, this let our web team manage the look and feel of those sites, the page content, but also allow our documentation and other teams publish collateral and documents to the site without having to go through our drupal admin. The module allows the admin to configure a CMIS query in drupal to dyanmically populate the page listing of assets and documents. The information for the files are all in Alfresco, the cmis call pulls that information in atom xml and then the drupal module parses and renders it on the page. When a user goes to download, it streams it through the cmisviews, which acts as a proxy to the repository.
  • #12: And to present a live site with an integration in place, I want to bring up the king center .orgIn an effort to preserve and share historical documentation related to the Civil Right movement with people around the world, the King Center in Atlanta, Georgia embarked on an ambitious project to digitize over one million documents from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other key figures from the movement. The King Center Image Project launched in 2011 with support from JPMorgan Chase & Co. with the goal of making speeches, sermons, hand written notes, correspondence, minutes of meetings, telegrams and other audio- visual materials by Dr. Martin Luther King accessible to people of all nations for generations to come.
  • #13: When we first began discussions around the project, the leads alluded to miss correttascott kings basement and painted a picture that was familiar to what we see here.
  • #14: We were able to work with several teams to make this content organized and available for a much wider audience, preserving dr kings legacy.
  • #15: The digital archive Joint implementation withJpmc technology for social good group,What was needed is a back-end digital archive repository to facilitate the imaging workflow and asset retrieval and display.Archived the Martin Luther King Papers consisting of over 200,000 documentsPreserved and makes accessible valuable cultural and historical documents worldwideLeveraged intelligent metadata for smart search resultsBuilt scalable content platform to store over 400 terabytes of data Developed workflow process for the digital assembly of documentsClustered environment to ensure content availability 24 hours a day.JPMorgan Chase recommended leveraging open source technology for the King Center Image Project because it is easily scalable and a fraction of the cost of proprietary technology. Micro Strategies helped The King Center build a workflow and approval process for digitizing and classifying the documents workflows to handle the importing and assembly of documents.
