Introduction
Agricultural information is an important factor that
interacts with other production factors.
Productivity of these other factors, such as land,
labor, capital and managerial ability, can arguably
be improved by relevant, reliable and useful
information.
Information supplied by extension , research,
education and agricultural organizations helps
farmers make better decisions.
 Therefore, there is a need to understand the
functioning of a particular agricultural information
system in order to manage and improve it.
Information System
Information system is
the information communication technology (ICT)
that an organization uses, and also the way in
which people interact with this technology in
support of business processes.

Agricultural Information System
• An agricultural information system can be
defined as a system, in which agricultural
information is generated, transformed,
transferred, consolidated, received and
fed back in such a manner that these processes
function synergistically to underpin knowledge
utilization by agricultural producers
(Roling, 1988)
Importance of AIS
• The main features of the information system
includes information retrieval facilities for
users from anywhere.
• Statistical information about fertilizer, research
institutes
• Land availability
• Diseases
• Suitable soil concentration for the
corresponding crops,
• Statistical information about exports and etc.
Potential users
• The potential users of agricultural information
include government decision-makers, policy-
makers, planners, researchers, teachers and
students, program managers, field workers and
farmers
(Zaman, 2002).

Information Technology
• Information
Information is a processed data with a meaning or an
organized, meaningful and useful interpretation of data.
• Technology
Technology is a human using object (tools, machines,
systems and material) to change the natural and human-
made environment.
• Information technology is the use of computers to
store, retrieve, transmit, and manipulate data, or
information, often in the context of a business or other
enterprise. IT is considered to be a subset of information
and communications technology (ICT).
Advantages of information technology
• Increase efficiency of employees
• Save time
• Improves communication
• Improves data storage
• Helps in data reporting and analysing
• Easy mobility
• Easy access of information
Role of IT in Agriculture
Two roles:
a) As a tool for direct contribution to agricultural
productivity
(b) As an indirect tool for empowering farmers to
take informed and quality decisions which will
have positive impact on the way agriculture and
allied activities are conducted.
Effects of IT in Agriculture

agricultural commodities in the market and their
prices to producers, consumers, traders, and
policy makers transparently and quickly.

Conclusion
• We are living an era of technological
advancement.
• Information technology played and playing a
very important role in agriculture and allied
sectors.
• Almost all the sectors were covered and
benefited through information technology.
• ICT tools transformed the information and
resource flow easier to the farming community.
