Exponents indicate the number of times a base number is used in a multiplication. The exponent is written as a small number above and to the right of the base number. Examples show that 82 = 8 × 8 = 64, 53 = 5 × 5 × 5 = 125, and 24 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 16. Exponents can also be called indices or powers.
