Virtualization Update
Virtualization Use Cases Business Continuity Improve disaster recovery Enable geographic diversification Add high availability options Test and Development Improve resource utilization Provision new applications in minutes Increase user uptime Hosted Client Improve data and application security Simplify management Reduce client infrastructure costs Consolidation Minimize capital expenditures Reduce operating costs Increase server utilization rates
The Virtualization Platform 2 Socket Server Users who want fewer VMs per server to minimize risk Environments where backup constraints limit the number of VMs per server Consolidation platform for remote offices or smaller sites Virtualizing to improve management: disaster recovery, business continuity, test and development Virtualizing to support legacy applications running on older operating systems 4 Socket Server Users who want fewer, larger servers with more VMs per box Users who need more robust VMs to run demanding applications (databases, SAP) Consolidation platform for data centers minimizing footprint Headroom needed for scaling growing workload or handling peak demands Offers more ‘capabilities’ such as processors/cores, memory, I/O ports and reliability features Confidential - Internal AMD only
Virtualization Performance Evaluations Consolidation Benchmarks VMware’s VMmark Cost per VM Evaluations – price/performance AMD’s cost per VM evaluations “ Real World” Workload Evaluations AnandTech’s vAPUS Mark I Virtualization Overhead Evaluation VMware’s SPECweb2005 submissions HP’s Server Based Computing evaluations

Editor's Notes

  • #11: Web Server performance : when virtualizing web servers in a 4P solution, the AMD Opteron “Shanghai” processor can deliver performance within 20% from a comparable unvirtualized server in a “raw performance score” comparison. The scores achieved by these two servers represent extremes when compared to most web serving environment. The real story of web server virtualization is the gains due to web farm consolidation and improved flexibility. Infrastructure serving as the web front end today is designed around hundreds or even thousands of often underutilized two and four core servers.  Consolidation of these servers onto modern systems with multi-core CPUs reduces costs, simplifies management and eases power and cooling demands. This SPECweb2005 result from VMware has shown that the AMD Opteron processor running ESX Server can handle loads much more extreme than anticipated in a consolidated web serving environment. SBC performance: this chart proves that the 2000 series AMD Opteron “Istanbul” processor has lower virtualization overhead when used in a general purpose (e.g. file/print) environment than a server using the Intel Xeon 5500 “Gainestown” processor. On the left side of the chart, the Xeon processor supports 402 users vs. Opteron’s 360 users. However, when a virtualiztion layer is added, the Opteron still supports 360 users (zero virtualization overhead degradation) while the “Gainestown” server drops to 340 users (15.42% virtualization degradation).
