This document introduces different types of questioning skills: open, probing, direct, and closed questions. Open questions encourage statements using "tell me about", "explain to me", or the 5Ws and 1H (who, what, why, where, when, how). Probing questions use those prompts to dig deeper into key points. Direct questions seek clarification, and closed questions clarify by seeking a yes or no answer. The goal of these questioning skills is to understand a situation by establishing facts, moving from an open understanding of others' perspectives to direct clarification to agreed upon facts.
