to technological advances and the
emergence of the internet

Instructional Design and Technology is
defined as:
• The analysis of learning, performance,
design, development, implementation,
evaluation, and management of
instructional and non-instructional
processes to improve learning and
performance in educational and workplace
systems
Evolution of
Instructional
Design and
Technology
• This field first emerged in the early 1900's and focused on the
incorporation of media for educational purposes, therefore,
Instructional Design is a new ideology that has emerged as the
field has undergone many changes and shifts in focus.
• In the early 1900s, Instructional Media focused on the physical
means of teaching or presenting material to students
• As technology advanced, the name and definition of the field
shifted to Instructional Technology
• Focused on processes and identifying problems in order to
provide solutions for improved learning
• Field shifted to theory, ethics and professionalism
• Broader field which supported instructional and non-
instructional learning
• Prioritized facilitation of learning to improve learning
and performance by focusing on design, development,
and evaluation
• Today, the field is called Instructional Design and Technology and
focuses on analysis of learning and performance in order to
establish systematic design processes to improve learning and
performance in both instructional and non-instructional settings
