Introduction of Irrigation
Irrigation means the process of supply of water
to soil for raising crops.
Irrigation Engineering
Irrigation Engineering means to controlling and
harnessing the various nautral sources of water by
constructing dams, reservoirs, canals and headworks
and finally distributing the water to agriculture and
industrial fields.
@ayushhajare
History of Irrigation
• Irrigation techniques have been introduced many
years ago.
• Ancient people from different regions used
irrigation system to supply water .
• Mesopotamia and Egypt were most successful user
of Irrigation process.
@ayushhajare
History of Irrigation
• Egypt claims having World's oldest dam 108m long,
12m high, built 5,000 years ago.
• After 6,000 year's ago messopotamia supported as
many as 25 million people.
@ayushhajare
Role of civil engineer in irrigation
Engineering
• Irrigation process involves civil engineer,
hydrologists,envoirmental experts and survey,
agriculture , scientists and other.
• Civil and irrigation Engineer are very important for
successful irrigation schemes.
@ayushhajare
. In Irrigation system we always need civil engineer to
construct barrages, dams, canals ,Wells distributing water
plants.
@ayushhajare
Needs of Irrigation
• Water is necessary for agriculture so, to
distributing water properly irrigation is important.
• If rainfall is less as per demand for plants ,
irrigation is necessary to fulfill the requirements of
plants.
@ayushhajare
.Now-a-days we needs smart irrigation, it helps in
minimal wastage of water.
.In this irrigation process, irrigation Engineer and civil
engineer play vital roles.
@ayushhajare
Classification of Irrigation
• Surface irritation
• Sub_Surface irritation
• Sprinkle irritation
@ayushhajare
Analysis of irrigation engineering
1.Surface Irrigation
• Surface irriagation is the application of water by
gravity flow to surface of field.
• The entire field is flooded , the water is fed into
small channels .
@ayushhajare
Surface irrigation can be classified into three
types.
• Flood irrigation
• Forrow irrigation
• Contour farming
@ayushhajare
A) Flood irrigation
Flood irrigation is an ancient method of irrigating
crops.
Very simply water is delivered to field by ditch
pipe and simply flows over ground.
Flood irrigation is an effective method of
Irrigation.
B) Furrow irrigation
Furrow irrigation is also same as flood irritation.
@ayushhajare
C) Contour farming
• Contour farming is farming with row
pattern than run nearly level around hill .
Not up and down hill.
• It reduces the rate of soil errosions.
@ayushhajare
2. Sub-Surface irrigation
• Sub-Surface irrigation means the uniform
application of small quantities of water at frequent
intervals below soil surface from different
emmissions points place at certain distance from
each other.
@ayushhajare
3.Sprinkle irrigation
• Sprinkle irrigation can be uses for residential,
industrial and agriculture usage.
• This method is use that place where lack of water
and as well as Sandy soil.
@ayushhajare
. Sprinkle irrigation system is suitable for all types of
field.
. In this method loss of water is minimum.
. This system is very costly
. Sprinkle irrigation requires high and continuously
power supply.
@ayushhajare
Big irrigation projects
• The big irrigation projects is in Kaleskwaram in
India.
• The Kaleskwaram lift irritation project is a multi
purpose irritation project on godavari river in
Kaleskwaram, India.
• Total cost to construct this dam is 1.2 lakh crore.

Future irrigation projects
Dibang Dam
• Dibang Dam is proposed and planned concrete
gravity dam and will be India's largest dam and
tallest concrete gravity dam in World.
• Dibang Dam is located in Arunachal Pradesh.
• This dam provide 3000 megawatts of hydroelectric
power.
@ayushhajare
Some Big Future irrigation project
• Kalpasar project- This project will be used for
irrigation, drinking and industrial.
• Icchampally project
• Tipaimukh project
• Tlawng project
@ayushhajare
Advantages of irrigation
• Irrigation makes it possible to grow cash crops .It
gives good return to farmers.
• It improves group water storage.
• It improves yields of crops
• Irrigation is used to generate hydroelectric power.
• Water supply
• Development of fishery's.
Disadvantage of irrigation
• Irrigation system are more expensive.
• Initial cost can be more than overall system.
• The sun can affect the tubes used for irrigation ,
shortening their usable life.
• High evaporation- may waste water.
• Filtaration is must.
@ayushhajare
Conclusion
• Irrigation Engineering is the major part of
civil engineering which has high
immportance as well as use.There is a
continuous development in this sector.
Also there are many opportunities for
employment in this sector.
