What is Android?
 Android was unveiled in year 2007 with the formation
of ‘Open Handset Alliance’ – a consortium of 84
companies.
 Android is based on LINUX kernel and is a Open-
Source project.
 The most popular Mobile operating system, with over
1 billion devices activated as of September, 2013.
 Initially developed by Android, Inc., which Google
later bought in 2005.
What is Android?
 Android's source code was released under the
Apache License, which means it can be freely
downloaded and modified by anyone.

 The user interface of Android is based on Direct
Manipulation.
 As of July 2013, Android has the largest number of
applications published and downloaded from various
stores.
 Allows side-loading of apps from third-party
sources.
History of Android
 4 Americans named Andy Rubin, Rich Miner , Chris
White and Nick Sears started developing Android in
2001. They formed Android, Inc. in 2003.
 Google initially decided to fund this company and
later acquired it in 2005. Google developed the
original Android OS with some changes and
completed it in 2007.
 1st commercial edition Android 1.0 and was launched
in 2008. HTC Dream G1 was the 1st smart phone with
an Android OS.
Features and Applications
 Dalvik Virtual Machine for running Applications.
 Optimized Graphics with support for GPU Chips.
 Integrated Browser with various connectivity
solutions such as WiFi, 3G, Bluetooth, GPRS and
EDGE.
 Support for various sensors such as Accelerometer,
Compass, Magnetometer and many more.
 Supports mass storage with features such as SQLite
technology.
 Full multimedia playback and support for major
codecs.
Features and Applications
 Android apps are available for download from various
sources, the 2 major being: Google Play and Amazon
Appstore.
 Also allows installing apps directly from the package
file: .apk.
 Allows switching between two or more applications,
without closing any of them. Referred to as
“Multitasking”.
 Supports full customization by installing various
modified ROMs from the web. Most popular being,

Android for Developers
 Developers have seen more success, user base and
profit in Android than in any other platform.
 For that, Google Play provides many features such as
Trial Apps, Paid Apps, In-App purchases, and even
Refunds to ensure revenue generation for the
Developers.
 Java and XML are the two languages used to write
and create Android applications.
 The Android SDK provides all the necessary tools for
creating Android apps.

Android Devices
 Samsung Electronics is the largest manufacturer of
Android devices with 81.3% market share in its
shipment.
 Android was designed primarily for smartphones and
tablets.
 Successfully deployed in Netbooks, Ebook readers,
Televisions and Wrist-Watches too.
Future of Android
 Google intends to bring Android to televisions with
Google TV, and the OS has seen in niche applications
on Headphones, Car CD and DVD players, digital
cameras, portable media players and landlines.
 Sony Mobile introduced waterproof versions of
Android, followed by Samsung Electronics
introducing Heart-Beat and Pulse rate sensors in
their phones.
 The revolutionary Google Glass is based on Android.
 Future Androids will be more secure and fluid with
introduction of Octa-core processors in Mobile
phones.
