What is it ?
 Helicopters are the most versatile flying machines in existence
today.
 Here we talk about the latest war machine flying around war
fields “The Apache Helicopter”.
 Most of the country like United State,
Afganistan, Greece, Japan, Israel,
the Netherlands and Singapore use Apache as their primary war
machine.
 In this topic, we look at the Apache’s amazing flight systems,
engines, weapon systems, sensor system and armour systems.
Specification
1. NAME : Boeing AH-64 Apache
2. Top Speed : 293 km/h
3. Length : 18 m
4. Wingspan : 15 m
5. Weight : 5,165 kg
6. Engine Type : Turboshaft
7. Role : Fighter Helicopter
8. Works on : Brayton Cycle
Flight System
 As it works on Brayton cycle, mostly used in Jet engines
 An Air standard cycle.
 In it's working the air enters the engine through a ram and gets compressed.
 Then compression takes place in compressor, heat is added to high pressure
and high temperature.
 By fuel injection and their consequent burning, the gases try to expand doing
work on turbine, coupled to the compressor.
 So, the air can't be reused, the jet moves forward based on the exit velocity
of combustive gases through nozzle many mechanical moving parts are
required for the process to accomplish, and the fuel burnt is of high cost.

Jet Engine
 Helicopters use turboshaft jet (Gas Turbine) engines to
power their rotors.
 A jet engine works on four very simple principles: “Suck,
Squeeze, Burn and Blow”.
 They are light, very powerful and economical. The best
part is that they are very reliable as well.
 Failure rates for gas-turbine engines are very low because
there are not as many internal moving parts as there are
in a reciprocating engine.
Basic Jet Engine Cross Section
Weapon System
 Guns: 30 mm rounds M230 Chain Gun with 1,200 rounds
 Hard points: Four pylon stations on the stub wings.
Longbows also have a station on each wingtip for an AIM-
92 Stinger twin missile pack.
 Rockets: Hydra 70 (70 mm), and CRV7 (70 mm) air-to-
ground rockets
 Missiles: Typically AGM-114 Hellfire variants; AIM-92 air to
air Stinger may also be carried

Ammunition and Missiles
Sensor System
 Detects surrounding ground forces, aircraft and buildings using a radar
dome mounted to the mast
 Uses radio wave to shape a structure and compare those to the database
 Night Vision Sensors (forward looking infra-red system)
 The computer transmits the night vision to a small display unit in each pilot's
helmet
 The video display projects the image onto a monocular lens in front of the
pilot's right eye.
 Manual controls by moving head
Armor System
 Evade enemy radar scanning
 A radar jammer to confuse the enemy
 Evade heat-seeking missiles(Black Hole
Suppression System)
 surrounded by Kevlar soft Armor
 The cockpit is protected by layers of reinforced
armour and bulletproof glass
Application
 The principal intended mission of the Apache is the
destruction of high-value targets with the HELLFIRE
missile.
 It is also capable of employing a 30mm M230 chain gun
and the Hydra 70 (2.75 inch) family of rockets that are
lethal against a wide variety of targets.
 American Apaches were used since 1989 in: Panama, Gulf
War, Bosnia, Kosovo and in the Iraq war
Conclusion
 With the design of the apache the very concept of
helicopter itself has changed all over the world.
 Many countries like Russia, Germany etc. have
rolled over their versions of attack helicopters.
 In this seminar I’ve tried to put forward some of
the design features.
