Jesus curses a fig tree for having leaves but no fruit, demonstrating the importance of fruitfulness. The next day, the disciples see that the fig tree has withered from its roots. Jesus then cleanses the temple, driving out those buying and selling within it. He says the temple should be called a "house of prayer for all nations" but they have made it a "den of thieves". The scribes and chief priests seek to destroy Jesus because of his teaching.
