I’m nervous. Maybe too nervous. I am waiting
patiently and anxiously in West London for the
upcoming Indie band, Luminites. I’m so excited.
Why? Because they are a girl band with a slight
edge; they are girls who actually create their own
sound, which is rare in today’s industry. Teamed
with an urban look and of course a Starbucks,
there is no doubt that this is the Luminites.
Candice: Haha, it came from the idea behind our
band. We want to ‘shine’ a new light on music and
show people the joys of a new and urban
combination of music (pop and rock).
Kirsty: Plus we are obviously all bright and
bubbly!
Jennifer: With one word? I don’t even know where
to begin. It is kind of an unanswerable question.
Our aim isn’t to make music just for selling; we
want to create a sound that we would want to
hear on the radio.
Candice: I think it is hard to describe it with just
one word and in today’s industry it is hard to
determine one specific genre. Everything is just a
mix of everything else.
Kirsty: But I think pop/indie rock sums it up pretty
well.
Kirsty: We’ve been great friends for such a long
time, I wouldn’t even class them as just friends
anymore – they’re my family. So with family you
know what annoys them and what doesn’t.
Jennifer: It’s like any relationship; you just know
when someone is feeling down.
Candice: I wouldn’t exactly say we dress to
portray some sort of meaning, we just want to
show that being successful in music is being who
you are.
Kirsty: Our style is one of the many reasons we
get along so well. We share a similar look and
love for fashion – it’s great. And the music is
pretty good too haha…
Jennifer: We’ve all always had a love for music.
My older brother plays the guitar and when I was
young I wasn’t interested in the usual childhood
toys like dolls; I wanted to be like my brother and
play the guitar.
Kirsty: Yeah, music is a big part of our lives and
so we want to make the most of it by creating it
ourselves.
Candice: I think it’s because recently not many
girls are known for playing their own music, which
is pretty sad, as it used to be the norm and so it
wasn’t a big deal.
Candice: Definitely! Years and years ago there
the music industry would have just been boys.
But when we won the BBC’s Sound of 2014
award, the top three were all female or female
fronted acts. It’s time that girls show that we can
bring it.
Jennifer: It can be daunting at first, but at the end
of the day we’re not just about the look we are
about the music and creating a new and urban
sound. Who cares if we look bad once in a while?
Who doesn’t?
Kirsty: Exactly haha! We really just want to be
ourselves and have fun by making music.
Candice: We really do just want to do what we
love! Make a sound that we would want to hear,
that’s the motive really.
Kirsty: If we didn’t love it, how can we expect
others to like it?
Candice: Exactly! Obviously there are artists who
make us appreciate music and sound, like the
girls from Haim are a massive inspiration,
especially for a female music industry.
Jennifer: Without the fans we wouldn’t be sitting
here. We are so grateful for their support. It really
means a lot to know that they could love sound as
much as we do.
Kirsty: It’s what music is all about – making
something that the fans love as much as the
artist.
Kirsty: Haha, we have some. But we really
wanted to make a sound for girls to listen and
relate to.
Candice: Yeah, it is so typical for rock and indie
music to be associated with boys, so it’s nice to
know that we can create a sound for girls to
appreciate too. But we love all our fans equally.
Kirsty: Haha, I kind of feel sorry for any guy that
likes us, as they have to be accepted by all three
of us, not just ourselves.
Jennifer: I don’t think it’s our approval you have to
worry about, it’s our Dad’s.
Candice: We are friends with some really cool UK
Bands, so it’s great to see them at a gig and chill
with them backstage.
Jennifer: The local pubs, especially in London,
are great for a chilled music hangout, it is where
we met Alex Turner.
Kirsty: LA for definite!
Jennifer: Female musicians there have really
nailed urban sound, I mean look at Haim, they
just have a presence.
