This document discusses opportunities for research on artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in organizations. It begins by defining AI and describing recent advances that have enabled machine learning algorithms to perform tasks like perception, language processing, and decision-making. The document then discusses four key capabilities enabled by AI: automation of structured work processes, engagement with customers and employees, insight and decision-making through data analysis, and innovation through new outcomes. For each capability, tensions between humans and AI systems are described. The document argues these capabilities present opportunities for information systems research to explore the interactions between socio-technical entities in organizations.
