Travel and Transportation
client partners with IBM to set
up a digital twin in the cloud
IBM is helping the client, who is a leading Travel and
Transportation provider in DACH, to set up an IoT Platform in
the Cloud based on the AWS IoT Platform. The goal of the overall
project is to create a digital representation of the group's
operational ecosystem and to enable data-driven use cases.
IBM's areas of responsibility includes the design and
implementation of highly available and hyper-scalable data
engineering pipelines. These pipelines receive the sensor data
stream originating from the assets, homogenize it and enrich it
with context, e.g. from various enterprise or geofencing
systems. Subsequently, the data is made available to operational
systems in near real-time. The implementation is based on
Amazon Web Services, taking into account common AWS
reference architectures for Serverless IoT and Big Data solutions
as well as the AWS Well Architected Framework.
The successful go-live of data pipelines for several asset groups
on the platform was achieved. By applying DevOps concepts, the
productive operation of the platform can be managed parallel to
its further development. For example, by abstracting individual
components of the data pipelines in a context-independent
manner, the data platform could be extended to an application

Client Challenge
In a challenging business environment with steep decline in premium revenues of
25% for 2 years, Groupama wanted to move from being a reactive claims

underwriter to a proactive risk concierge. In 2015, the company began offering
telematics-enabled automotive coverage supported by a third-party company. In
2016 they took the bold step of building its own telematics capability rather than
relying on a third party.
Our Solution
IBM and Groupama built together an end-to-end vertical solution using Watson IoT
for the collection of vehicles data, a data lake to integrate and structure its myriad
data sources, and an analytics environment to generate insights. This also included
oversight for the provision and installation of the telematic devices in vehicles. The
platform helped Groupama have a single view of their connected customer across
multiple line of business and therefore, they were able to improve profitability by
handling claims and risk selection more efficiently. Additionally they improve
customer experience through prevention and added-value services.
Moreover, the developed platform enabled Groupama to have full ownership of
their data and to position themselves as industry platform provider to serve other
insurers and verticals. a single view of their connected customer.

Client Examples – Port of Rotterdam
Sweden’s capital city of Stockholm has been working on climate
change mitigation and adaption since the 1990s. The city is at the
forefront of sustainable development with pioneering policies to
ensure it meets its ambitious environmental targets.
However, urban development planners at City of Stockholm were

real triggers of traffic flows in the city due to lack of information.
By connecting real time data on passenger flows to IBM’s
Internet of Things platform and enriching the data with e.g.
weather insights, new insights informs policy making and also
promote services that will in turn promote increased use of public
transportation and environmentally friendly methods but also
facilitate traffic flow generally in the city and promote higher

  • #42: Speaker Notes | Fact is that we have only scraped the surface of converting the majority of our highly variable and complex documents to a machine-readable format, such that too many of our processes still depend on human data extraction, with all its shortcomings of limited capacity and human errors. In fact the processes that require extraction from our most valuable knowledge workers are least accessible. In short, this means, execution of your digital strategy may lack the most valuable data inputs at scale Institutional knowledge of how an SME extracts actionable insight from documents remains uncaptured and subject to loss Processes remain stubbornly unchanged due to the bottlenecks of manual document handling and your organization ins increasingly exposed to audit risk as larger and larger expected sample sizes become the new reasonable person standard.
