In 1950 she received permission to start the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India to care for the poor and by 1996 the order had grown to over 4,000 nuns. Mother Teresa received numerous awards for her humanitarian work before passing away in 1997 in Calcutta at age 87 from heart failure.
