ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION FOR
LEARNING
UNIT – 1
1.1-MEASUREMENT , ASSESSMENT AND
EVALUATION
BY- KAVITA PADMAWAR
.
MEASURMENT
The act or the process of ascertaining the extent or
quantity of something.
For eg. 1. Rupali’s Weight – 45 kgs
2. Neelima got 75 marks in mathematics.
3. Priya’s height is 5’2’’.
IMPORTANCE OF MEASUREMENT
 Measurement is a baseline of evaluation.
 Whatever data is collected in measurement are
processed , analysed and interpreted in the form of
opinion of the evaluator.
 Without measurement it is not possible to evaluate
anyone.
IMORTANCE OF MEASUREMENT-
 it gives numerical description.
 Measurement is essential for evaluation process.
 Measurement is in objective form, so it is useful in
daily routine.
 It is important to decide the quality of a thing or a
person.
 Measurement can be compared with the standard
norms.
ASSESSMENT-
 “Assessment is the procedure to judge the progress
of a learner with the help of data collected by
different evaluation tools.”
 Assessment involves testing of the students,
correction of the student’s work.
PRINCIPLES OF ASSESSMENT-
 It should be mentioned what is to be assessed.
 The procedure of the assessment should be related
to the characteristics of performance to be
measured.
 Different tools and techniques are included in
assessment.
 An assessor should be skilled one. He or she
should know, how to use a particular tool, the
nature of the observations.
IMPORTANCE OF ASSESSMENT-
 It helps to evaluate the students.
 It gives proper meaning to the evaluation process.
 It describes the facts.
 It guides to improve the teaching learning process.
EVALUATION DEFINITIONS
 Evaluation refers to the act or process of determining
the value of something.
 Qualitative judgment of how good or how satisfactory an
individual’s performance has been.
 Systematic process of determining the extent to which
educational objectives are achieved by the students.
 It is a study to determine the effectiveness of instruction
in respect of an individual child, a group of children or
the school programme.
 Evaluation includes both quantitative and qualitative
description of pupil behavior plus value judgement.
PRINCIPLES OF EVALUATION-
 Purposeful or based on the objective.
 Selection of evaluation technique.
 Comprehensive evaluation.
 Proper use of evaluation tech.
 Continuous process.
 Done by many.
STEPS OF EVALUTION
 Identifying and defining.
 Planning learning experiences.
 Providing evidence through various tools.
 Feedback to improve teaching learning.
CHARACTERISTICS OF EVALUTION-
 It is the method to test, the extent to which the
objectives are achieved.
 It includes examinations and other tools also.
 Different tools and techniques are used.
 It is continuous process.
 It is the scientific process, so it is called objective.
 It gives feedback to students, teachers and the
whole educational system.
 It is quantitative and qualitative in nature.
IMPORTANCE OF EVALUTION PROCESS-
 It gives the outcome of teaching learning process.
 It can be understood the achievement according to
the objectives.
 Evaluation process gives the feedback about
students, teachers, teaching-learning process,
syllabus and evaluation tool etc.
 It is inclusive and continuous process which is
useful which is useful for the students progress.

1. Definition The process of
ascertaining the
extent or quantity of
something.
It is the process to
judge the
performance of an
individual to
evaluate.
It refers to the act or
process of
determining the
value of something.
2. Aim Numerical valuation
is the main aim.
To decide learning
outcomes is the aim.
To justify and
evaluate.33
3. Nature It is totally numeric in
nature.
It is descriptive. It
describes in
quantitative and
qualitative form.
It concludes and
interpret the data.

Details Measurement Assessment Evaluation
5. Process Measurement is a
limited process.
In this process the
data collection is at
high extent for the
evaluation and
assessed
objectively.
It is inclusive
process.
6. Description It describes the
facts.
It gives the valuation
for the facts.
It decides the
standard of the
values given to
the facts.
7. Progress It answers to how
much progress?
It collects the
information to
describe the facts.
It gives information
of progress.
8. Related to Objectivity. Tangible Things. Intangible Things.
9. Tool Physical
measurement tools.
e.g. Meter, liter
kilogram.
Tests are essential. Cumulative
records are
necessary.
10. Use Measurement of
numerical
information.
Activities and
description of the
facts.
