Franqie Chan Jia Yi 2014050035 Film & TV Group 1 Asian Cinema Assignment 1 SuckSeed Directed by : Chayanop Boonprakob Written by : Chayanop Boonprakob & Tossapol Tiptinnakorn Storyline : - This story is about three teenagers chase for their music dream. During the process of chasing dream, they faced a lot of conflicts and problems such as friendship conflicts and relationship problems. In the end, Director Background : - Chayanop Boonprakob is consider as a fresh director. SuckSeed is his first film. Although it is his first film, he manages to make the film very attractive and full of story. This film manage to get profits USD2,600,673 according to Wikipedia. As he is a new director so I didn’t manage to find many info about him. Story breakdown & Own Opinion : - First, I actually find that the story a bit boring. After some time watched the beginning, I feel it is quite interested because I personally like this genre type of movie. The first thing special about this movie is during the singing part, the singer will actually appear in the scene and this is really weird but I feel funny as I never watch before. You can actually feel the scene. The feeling brings out by every scene is so strong. It shows that everyone has their own imagination. Just like me listen to music, I will imagine that the singer is beside me and sings together with me. It is just so close to reality. The continuity of the story is very good, I can actually sense that the scene is related and will not feel confuse and wonder. The movie first start with the singing school where all the students like to sing and very enjoy the class but just the main character Ped, a very shy little boy and can’t really sing, Earn, who the girl Ped falls in love with can sing very well and very enjoy. I like this kind of opening, though it is a bit boring, and I not really know Thai song so I feel that they sing not very good. But
- 2. actually it is related to the next scene, it consider as the background of the characters and show the characteristics. The first performance where Khung and Friends perform on a kids art festival. This really a nice sub plot to show that normal human won’t success without fail. They failed on their first performance. This reflect that human always want to success only first try, if they didn’t manage to achieve anything, they will just give up and do something else, just like this movie. Khung did not give up is because of the girl he fancy, Earn. The characters in this movie show a lot of characteristic that we actually can meet someone having this kind of personality. This movie is really close to reality as I mentioned. I like these kind of movie because you can feel it very real, not like others those very imaginative movie, you can’t really be the character, but this film no, you no need to imagine, just watch and feel it. The sub plot about Ped and Earn is very nice, very detail as I personally gone through these before so I really can feel about it very much. I do actually cry when the scene after Khung told Ped that he likes Earn and it shocked Ped. After that they go to The Arena live show and Khung buy Earn a drink and Earn did not want to accept and ask Ped to take it, but Khung hints Ped to reject her. After that, Earn get a call, meanwhile, Khung ask Ped to go back after the show as he want to confess to Earn. Ped feels very sad as he is the first one who likes Earn but not dare to say it out. Ped straight away leave the show and go back. He open his lyrics book and feel solemn. He walks alone on the street while Khung and Earn having a good time. It just so heart brakes during that scene. I don’t know if I am the only one who cry as I go too deep in this movie. I also like about the animation when Khung start to draw. The animation is about how they get hurt and stand up together strongly. The animation is very unique as it is just a drawing in a piece of paper and animate become a short sub plot. It is very interesting. I like this kind of special scene in one film. Although it is neither the main scene nor climax but it somehow give you a special memory about it. You can remember it well after you finish watched the film because it is very special and unique. It can capture your attention easily although it is just simple animation nothing fancy, but still look very attractive. There are too many sub plots in this story and it make the story become more attractive and have a good continuity. Some of the film may also have a lots of sub plots but many of it just want to drag the story but this film no. The director fully used the sub plot to make the film more interested and more to teenager’s life. Although some of the sub plots can be cut off just like they go to the final stage of Hot Wave Music Award and meet Brother Toon. I know it is a part of the story but not actually need to be screened as I don’t think it is really important for the
- 3. whole movie. In addition, the part where Khung and Ped go to a music shop and choose a lots of electric guitar but end up just buy a bass guitar I don’t think it is necessary to put in. For the ending part, it touched me also. The way Ped do to touch Khung actually touched me. It feels just so warmhearted when you have a friend like Ped. Most of the human nowadays always fight with a small matter and never get back together because of face problem. Nonetheless, in this movie it shows that how much Ped cares about this friendship and be the first one try to get back the relationship. I think this is really a good lesson for teenagers nowadays. Overview : - This film is consider as a good film with moral value and lesson for me. I always like this kind of genre film. I watched some same genres films before and I feel although it is about teenagers, friendship and relationship, but it somehow have differences between each film. Ten marks as a judge I will give 8 marks for this movie. As this is the first film for the director I think it is good enough to have this kind of film. For the acting part, though it is not very good but just so real, so true. They so deep into their character, and they didn’t act, they become the character. All of the above is from my own opinion, I hope it won’t cause any misunderstand. Thank you.
