Joan of Arc was a French peasant girl who in the 15th century claimed divine visions told her to support the Dauphin's claim to the French throne and drive out the English. She led the French army to several important victories but was later captured, tried for heresy, and burned at the stake at age 19. She has since been the subject of numerous films, TV shows, books, paintings, and statues depicting her courage and patriotism. She is considered a symbol of feminism and individualism for rejecting social norms to follow her spiritual calling.
