Assure Method Assignment
Using the Assure Method I will create a lesson plan based on scenario two which involves the
teaching holiday traditions to 4th graders. There are 20 students 11 girls, and 9 boys. There are 2
Muslims, 3 Jewish and 2 African Americans.
A- Analyze the Learners
General Characteristics of the Learners:
The students in this scenario are 4th graders who are going to be learning holiday traditions from
other students whose cultures differ from their own. The student’s ages in 4th grade are typically
between nine and ten depending on their birthdays. Some students may be outliers and be eight
or eleven depending on other circumstances, like skipping a grade or being held back. There are
eleven girls and nine boys making it a class of twenty students. In this scenario the classroom has
two Muslim students, three Jewish students, and two African-American students. The other
students cultures are undisclosed so we can make no assumptions about their cultures.
Specific Entry Competencies:
Before I dive into this lesson I need to know the students current knowledge about holidays and
holiday traditions. For this I will use a matching game that involves matching the holiday to the
holiday traditions or to the holidays celebrated dates. The ones with the dates will only be the
holidays that are set on unchanging dates, such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day. The major
holidays that won’t be included in the dates are Easter, Memorial Day, and Chinese New Year.
They will also take a small quiz that will not be graded, but this will allow both styles of learners
to have a fair chance.
Learning Styles:
These students are still in elementary school so they are still at the age where they enjoy learning
about new things and since they are at the upper level of the school they should be able to
remember information better. In order to help them remember new information that they are
taught it should be fun for them. Some of the students may be able to read and retain
information, others may need a hands on experience to retain information and for that I will be
teaching them using both types of learning styles. Including worksheets that highlight the
information taught that day and also allow them a hands on experience that follows along with
what has been taught so that both styles of learners are reached.
S-State the Objectives
My 4th grade students will develop a new knowledge of holiday traditions and the ways they are
celebrated in other cultures by watching educational videos, singing traditional songs, having
open discussions that allow time for answering questions, group presentations, and having parties
with the foods eaten during the holiday that was chosen, they will have a new found knowledge
of the traditions by the end of the semester with 95% accuracy.
Audience: My 4th grade students
Behavior: My students will develop a new knowledge of holiday traditions and the ways they
are celebrated in other cultures by watching educational videos, singing traditional songs, having
open discussions that allow time for answering questions, group presentations, and having parties
with the foods eaten during the holiday that was chosen.
Condition: They will have a new found knowledge of the traditions by the end of the semester.
Degree: With 95% accuracy.
S- SelectMethods, Media, and Materials
I have chosen to let the students learn about holiday traditions through the use of educational
videos, singing traditional songs, open discussion and questions, group presentations, and having
parties with the traditional holiday foods. Since some of the students come from diverse cultures
it should keep the class entertained by being very hands on and full of fun new information.
Through the use of the educational videos they will learn the basics of the selected holiday
traditions that we will celebrate in class. After the video is over we will play a game to make sure
they remember the important parts of the video.
Since this lessons will be focused around the traditions of the children in class it needs to be very
hands on and full of entertainment, while still being accurate. For this lesson I would need a lot
of media help. I would need access to a computer so that if the students have any questions at all
we can look it up immediately and find the answer to the question. This lesson focuses a lot on
the students teaching their classmates about their holiday traditions and for that I would need to
meet with the student’s parents to ensure the authenticity is kept. I could also ask the parents to
help their children out with the projects by thinking of ideas that would be hands on and full of
fun learning.
To help the students remember what they learned that day in class they should be given a large
folder so that they can put their materials from parts of the holiday traditions lesson in them. The
students will also have handouts that highlight the important parts of the lesson. They can add
notes to these handouts. They will also make crafts that may be associated with the holiday.
U- Utilize Media and Materials
Preview the Materials:
To ensure that none of the material contains anything vulgar or offensive to anyone I will go
over the material before sending it home with the students. To go an extra step I may even send
home a preview of the lesson to the parents so that they can go over it again and make sure that
there is nothing offensive hidden in any of the lessons.
I will also make sure that there are no spelling errors or punctuation errors since we are trying to
be as professional as possible.
I will review all of the videos and songs that are going to be played in class to make sure that
they are suitable for the learning of the classroom and also ensure that they are appropriate. With
no vulgar scenes or language. This includes cursing or racial problems that may occur.
I will make sure that the media works before class to ensure that my lessons for that day do not
need to be changed due to technical errors.
Prepare the Materials:
I will make the folders for their lessons myself and have extras available in case something
happens to the folders over the course of the semester.
I will also prepare the handouts for the class’s lessons that will include the highlights of the
selected holiday traditions.
To help the students learn the traditional songs I will print out lyric sheets for them and
encourage them to practice the songs at home with their parents. This will give them extra time
to learn the songs and let their parents know what they are learning in class.
I would really like to have authentic traditional foods for the parties that will be having in class,
so I will ask some of the parents to help out with the preparation of the food. And if they don’t
have time to do that, I would like to have the recipe so that the students are still able to enjoy
traditional food.
For the group presentations I will meet with the students and see their progress on their
presentations before they presented them in front of the class. This will give me a chance to
assess their ability to work together and sort of any problems they might be having with their
presentation.
For the videos that we will be viewing in class I want to make sure they come from trusted
educational companies and are not just useless, information less videos. The point of the videos
is the help the children that learn better when presented with visual material so I want to make
sure it stays as close to the lessons and what they’re being taught.
I will also make sure that everyone in class can see and hear the video that is being played,
whether it be played on a projector, smart board, or on the TV.
Prepare the Learners:
To make sure that the students are prepared for the lesson, I will need to make sure that they
know the objective and main points of the lesson beforehand. I will tell them the objectives for
the day, week, month, and semester to make sure that they understand how the lesson will go.
I will make sure to tell them about the materials that will be used and classroom events, such as
videos, handouts, discussions, songs, presentations, and parties that will happen.
I will give them the ideas of what they should be learning and understanding throughout the
lesson that is being taught to them.
Prepare the Environment:
In order for the students to be able to participant I will need to teach them the lyrics to the songs
that we are going to learn. For that some movements may require more space and for that we will
move the desks so that there is room for all the students to participate in the song.
Educational videos can sometimes get boring and the students’ minds will wonder and for that I
will use some snacks to reward the students for watching the video quietly and intently. This will
promote good behavior throughout the lesson.
When it comes time for the students to have discussions in class the students who are preparing
for their presentation will be at the front of the class in their desks answering questions that are
asked by students in the class.
The desks will also be separated into groups depending on what holiday tradition they will be
presenting. This will allow the students to get comfortable with the idea of working with each
other.
Provide a Learning Experience:
When teaching the students new parts of the lesson I will have them watch the tutorial
thoroughly and encourage them to ask questions when learning something new.
Since the students will be asked to sing some traditional songs I will teach them the lyrics in
smaller sections so that they can memorize the song easier, instead of trying to teach them the
entire song at once.
When they are watching videos they will be asked if they want a snack, they will only be given
one snack a week depending on their behavior while watching the film. If they pay attention,
remember the videos information, and have good behavior while watching the film they will be
given an award. This will promote good behavior.
When the students are working on their handouts I will play the songs that we have been learning
for the lesson, this will let them learn the song unknowingly and may help them learn the lyrics
faster to the songs.
Require Learner Participation:
Not all students learn the same way, some learn through visual stimulation, auditory stimulation,
hands on learning, or written/ reading learning. For that reason there will be a chance in this
lesson for every type of learner to ensure fairness and understanding throughout the class.
For the students that learn better with visual stimulation, I will be playing the educational videos
that will further explain the point of the lesson and will also play a karaoke version of the songs
on the TV so that they can learn the songs that way.
For the students that learn better through auditory stimulation I will be teaching the songs
through the listening of music and the points of the lesson through easy to remember songs.
For the students that learn through hand on learning, they will able to understand the lesson
through working on their handouts and learning the moves the song through mirroring the
movements that I will be doing.
For the students that learn better through written and reading assignments I will be giving them
highlights of the lesson and readings of the selected traditional holidays.
To make sure that the students are learning everything that they need to know we will have board
races, a small quiz, and Jeopardy game to review what they’ve been taught. At the end of the
first week they will have one review test that will allow me to see the weak points in the lesson
and work harder on those parts to make sure that they full understand the lesson.
E- Evaluate and Revise:
After I go through the lesson and test the students on what they have learned so far and see
where their weak points are. I will assess what I think may need to change in order to help them
learn and ask the students as a class what they think about the lesson and see if they have any
ideas about what would make the lesson more fun and memorable for them. While still allowing
them to learn.
I will ask questions like: Did you have fun doing this lesson so far? What was your favorite/least
favorite part? Would you do this project again if you had the chance? What would you
change/not change? Why? What part of the lesson should be worth the most points? Did you like
the way the lesson was taught? Why or why not?
Questions like those will give me the feedback I need to either leave the lesson the same or
change the materials or the way that I am teaching the lesson. I will also allow them to answer
the questions anonymously, so that they will answer truthfully.
