Analyze the Learners
General Characteristics
This plan is designed for a group of average learners who are enrolled in an American culture
course consisting of 15 students ages 10 to 19 years old. There are 8 males and 7 females, who
are mildly to severely vision impaired. The entire group is of Russian origin but speak English as
a second language.
Entry competencies
1. The ability to use a computer
2. Experience in note taking
3. General language terms for American dialect of English
Learning Styles
The students will be primarily taught by audio means due to their visual limitations. A mix of
sound clips, songs, and video media will be used to immerse the learners in the experience of a
4th of July celebration. Hands on experience will be provided for all in order to understand the
activities related to July 4th.
State Objectives
My students will be able to orally recount American 4th of July activities after 1 week of lectures,
listening to songs, playing games, holding a mock celebration, and watching fireworks with 80%
accuracy.
Select Methods, Media, and Material
Large group instruction will be utilized with several activities using small groups.
An overhead projector with a larger screen will be needed to present a power point presentation.
An audio system will be used in tandem with the projector system to play videos and sound clips
throughout the unit. This system will be checked 30 minutes prior to each class.
Varying colors of water balloons will be used for a demonstration of a popular 4th of July
activity.
A local park will be reserved for a mock 4th of July celebration. If it rains this will also be part of
the lesson as it sometimes rains on July 4th and disrupts the activities, at which point the
festivities will be moved to the school gymnasium.
The amphitheater at the school will be utilized for viewing of fireworks shows recorded and
uploaded to YouTube. Videos and music media will be previewed to check for appropriateness
and quality. The videos and music will be downloaded to Pocket as a backup in case the internet
becomes an issue.
A video camera will be used for students to record their assessment of the fireworks show. A
memory card video camera will be retained for this purpose from the A/V department as well as
my personal iPhone’s camera will be held as a backup.
Utilize Media and Material
Preview the Materials
All videos, sound clips, etc. will be previewed in order to maintain appropriateness and quality
for a visually impaired group.
Prepare the Materials
The equipment needed will be in the classroom: projector and view screen, computer with
internet access, video camera, pencils and paper or braille computer for those that need them.
Prepare the Environment
Each day the class will be set up to work in small groups with the small groups oriented to allow
for large group demonstrations and viewing of materials. The more visually impaired students
will be placed closer to the front of the classroom. The outdoor activities will be scheduled well
in advance and permission slips will be distributed on the first day for those who will need them.
Students will be asked to bring in water balloons of the proper July 4th colors and those will be
placed with balloons that have been purchased prior.
Prepare the Learners
The students will be given a rough schedule of the class sessions and the types of material that
will be presented. Classroom policies will be presented to the learners and general questions will
be asked about their current knowledge of July 4th celebrations.
Provide the Learning Experience
The students will be shown video clips, sound bites, and various hands on activities during the
progression of the course. Links to all media will be made available via email to each student for
further access outside of the classroom.
Require Learner Participation
Large group activities
During the lecture students will write down the things that most interest them about the activities
discussed and then read them aloud.
The students will be asked toward the end of the week to vote on their favorite of the 4th of July
songs. The winner will be announced and played.
During the water balloon game the students will work as a team to find and throw all the red,
white, and blue balloons at the teacher. The older students and/or less visually impaired will
select the balloons to be thrown by the younger and/or more visually impaired. Clean up will
also be part of the festivity.
At the mock celebration, the students will assist in the preparation of food as well as
consumption/sampling.
During the explosive fireworks video viewing, the students will watch the entire and record a
video in which they describe it to someone who has never experienced a fireworks show. These
videos will be viewed/listened to the next day.
Small group activities
An assortment of clips via YouTube will be played from the 1976 Bicentennial celebration
where students will list what they see or hear pertaining to the celebration activities. The more
severely visually impaired will list what they hear and the students who can see will list what
they see. Lists will be read aloud in groups and compared. By this comparison it should
accentuate the sights for the hearing impaired and the sounds for those who are less impaired.
Evaluate and Revise
Assessment of Learner Achievement
On the final day the individual students will give a general outline of a 4th of July celebration that
they would plan in a one on one session with the instructor. They will then be asked to list some
of the activities associated with the celebration and types of food consumed.
Evaluation of Media and Methods
The last component of the lesson, oral interview, will be for the student to highlight what they
liked most about the class and what they liked least. The interviews will be recorded and care
will be taken when reviewing the video to assess which subject material seemed least
remembered overall and revise the associated activity or replace it.
Evaluation of Overall Instruction
The students will be asked to give their anonymous assessment of the class and instructor using
Google docs to allow students to leave their comments. The site will be emailed to them or a
paper form will be given to them to fill out prepared questions.
