The “Genre”
In Writing
An ASSURE Method Plan
Analyze the Learner
• I’m teaching a private school 7th grade class
English class.
• My classroom has 16 students.
• 9 girls and 7 boys
• 2 of my girls are vision impaired,
• 3 (2 boys and 1 girl) have ADD,
• 1 student has an IEP,
• And 1 student has Asperger's.
Main Objective
• My students will demonstrate their
understanding of the different types of genres
and writing styles by creating a poster of a
redesigned book cover and present it to the
class, complete daily mini assignments that
assess their understanding of the topics, and
complete a writing assignment/ reflection at
the end of the week.
Day-to-Day
• Day One- I will introduce my students to genre and
writing style. The definitions and most common of
both will be discussed after watching videos and
will begin brainstorming as a class for the poster
assignment. We will also read an excerpt from
chapter one of The Outsiders and discuss what
genre it could be, it will also be a podcast they will
listen to for homework.
• Day Two- The class will answer a few questions
based on a digitally altered photos, and will
prepare a presentation they will do on Zello.
Day-to-Day
• Day Three: The students will finish their
posters, and do a mock presentation with
another student to practice. There will be a
pop-quiz. The students will also watch a video
on arts and bots, and will compete a mini
project based on that video.
Day-to-Day
• Day Four- The students will present their
posters and have a list of well formed
questions to ask their peers after they’ve
presented.
• Day Five- Students will be reading the rest of
chapter one of The Outsiders on their own
after they complete the online response and
reflection.
