ASSURE (Monday)
Analyze Learners
My classroom is a private school 7th grade English class. There are 16 students: 9 boys
and 7 girls; 2 girls with vision impairments; 3 students (2 boys and 1 girl) have ADD; 1
student has an IEP; and 1 student has Asperger’s.
State Objectives
The students in my classroom will be introduced to genre and writing style by watching
and listening to the YouTube videos I made on those topics, and with 75% accuracy be
able to tell me in their own words what genre and writing style are.
They will brainstorm ideas for their main project, and will be able to apply their basic
knowledge of genre and writing style to the assignment with 75% accuracy.
The students will also start reading The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, and will have a podcast
to listen to in case they want to go back, or if they missed class. They will be able to
answer the questions based on the excerpt with 75% accuracy.
Select Methods, Materials, and Media
The YouTube videos will be provided to the students, and will be watched/ listened to in
place of a lecture. Discussion will follow with a brainstorming session for their poster
project to solidify their understanding and to dig up any questions they have.
The podcast will be made available in class, and will be on the class wiki the students are
already aware of.
The wiki will have a page specifically for students with all the material they need to
complete their assignments, and have my contact information if they have questions.
Utilize Media and Materials
The students will listen and watch the videos, and will be able to ask questions
afterwards.
Brainstorming time will require pencil and paper and their brainpower
We will be reading a little bit of The Outsiders and will be answering the questions that
go along with it together.
Require Student Participation
Students will sit and listen/watch videos and teacher reading.
Students will participate in group discussion with their peers and teacher.
Students will bounce ideas off one another and teacher.
Evaluate and Revise
Evaluate: During the discussion of the videos and brainstorming, I will be gauging their
understanding of genre and writing style orally. I will ask each student in different ways
how they would explain genre and writing style to me.
Revise: If my students would benefit more from a lecture on genre and writing style, I
would include that the next time I taught it.
If they would even benefit from it more now, I would move things around in order to get
it in.
