THE ASSURE MODEL
Introduction
 Effective use of IM requires systematic
planning
 The ASSURE model provide a guide to the
major steps in this planning
The Model
 Analyze the learners needs
 State the objectives
 Select Methods and Materials
 Utilize Media and Materials
 Require Learner Participation
 Evaluate and Revise
Analyze learner’s needs
 first step is to analyze the learners so as
to select the best medium to meet the
objectives
 Factors to consider in this process:
– General characteristics of learners (age,
gender, level, class size, location, cultural bk)
– Specific entry competencies (prerequisite skills
– Learning styles – hands on, group work,
games, discussions. Learning styles quiz
(Maslow’s hierarchy of needs)
State Objectives
 stated in terms of what the learner will be able to do as
a result of instruction.
 help ensure proper evaluation
 should be stated as an observable behavior -verb that
describes the new capability of the learner
 State conditions under which this capability will be
demonstrated
 state the degree at which the new behavior need to be
displayed
 Selection of material will depend on the objectives being
pursued.
 Should be realistic and achievable within the specified
duration of the lesson
Select Methods and Materials
 choose appropriate teaching methods and
materials that will be used to achieve the
objectives.
 Provide rationale for the selection of the
materials.
 When selecting materials;
– Select available material
– Modify existing materials
– Design new materials
Utilize Media and Materials
 Clearly outline how the materials will be
used to implement your methods
 Before using the material;
– Prepare the material(gather, determine
sequency, who will do what)
– Preview the material
– Prepare the environment
– Prepare the learners (provide background)
Require learner participation
 For effective instruction, learners should be
engaged in the lesson (both mentally and
physically)
 There should be activities that allow the
students to practice knowledge or skills and to
receive feedback before they are formally
assessed. The feedback may be provided by
teacher, computer or other students.
 Some instructional materials lend themselves to
participation more than others
Evaluate and Revise
Assess learners’ achievement
 At the end of the instruction it is important to evaluate
its impact and effectiveness.
 Did the learner learn what they were supposed to learn?
 Design assessment tasks that require students to
demonstrate the behavior.
 The assessment depends on the nature of the objective
 Did the methods effectively assist to meet the
objectives?
 Describe how you are going to assess the lesson.
