This document discusses asynchronous and synchronous e-learning methods. It finds that asynchronous e-learning, using tools like email and discussion boards, supports flexible learning when students cannot be online at the same time, while synchronous e-learning, using tools like videoconferencing and chat, helps build a sense of community. The author conducted a study comparing asynchronous online discussions to synchronous online chat sessions in two e-learning courses, and interviewed students to understand their experiences. The study found that different communication types are important for building online communities, including content-related, task planning, and social support exchanges.
