Applications Using Dublin Core

• OAI-PMH Harvesting (Open Archives
Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting)
• RDF
Basic Principles
• Everything is optional, and everything is
repeatable!
• Is extensible – vocabularies and linked
data
Vocabularies
• “The terms in DCMI vocabularies are
intended to be used in combination with
terms from other, compatible vocabularies
in the context of application profiles and on
the basis of the DCMI Abstract Model
[DCAM].”
http://dublincore.org/documents/dces/#DCTERMS
Namespaces
• “All changes made to terms of the Dublin
Core Metadata Element Set since 2001 have
been reviewed by a DCMI Usage Board in
the context of a DCMI Namespace Policy
[DCMI-NAMESPACE]. The namespace policy
describes how DCMI terms are assigned
Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) and sets
limits on the range of editorial changes that
may allowably be made to the labels,
definitions, and usage comments associated
with existing DCMI terms.”
http://dublincore.org/documents/dces/
Dumb Down Principle
• “According to this rule, a client should be
able to ignore any qualifier and use the
value as if it were unqualified. While this
may result in some loss of specificity, the
remaining term value (minus the qualifier)
must continue to be generally correct and
useful for discovery. Qualification is
therefore supposed only to refine, not
extend the semantic scope of an Element.”
http://dublincore.org/documents/dces/
Qualified Dublin Core
• 5.1 Abstract model
• A qualified DC record is made up of one or more properties and their
associated values.
• Each property is an attribute of the resource being described.
• Each property must be either:
– one of the 15 DC elements,
– one of the other elements recommended by the DCMI (e.g. audience)
[DCTERMS],
– one of the element refinements listed in the DCMI Metadata Terms
recommendation [DCTERMS].
• Properties may be repeated.
• Each value is a literal string.
• Each value may have an associated encoding scheme.
• Each encoding scheme has a name.
• Each literal string value may have an associated language (e.g. en-
GB).

Label: Source
Definition:
A related resource from which the
described resource is derived.
Comment:
The described resource may be derived
from the related resource in whole or in
part. Recommended best practice is to
identify the related resource by means of
a string conforming to a formal
identification system.
Type
Label: Type
Definition: The nature or genre of the resource.
Comment:
Recommended best practice is to use a
controlled vocabulary such as the DCMI
Type Vocabulary [DCMITYPE]. To describe
the file format, physical medium, or
dimensions of the resource, use the
Format element.

Label: Format
Definition:
The file format, physical medium, or

Comment:
Examples of dimensions include size and

to use a controlled vocabulary such as the
list of Internet Media Types [MIME].
