Using audioBoo as a Audio-only tool in an Online Learning Environment

Integrating audio-based student-instructor feedback in your ANGEL course creates an
instruction based tool that lives inside your online classroom by being embedded. By
embedding your audio feedback you can not only appeal to the aural learner and, by being
able to hear one’s voice within the context of an online course, social presence (as viewed in
the Community of Inquiry) is increased by humanizing your interaction. Also attractive is the
possibility that podcasts can be used to speed up grading time.

This document will give you step-by-step instructions on how to create an AudioBoo account,
create a “podcast” and embed it into your course.

Creating an audioBoo account

#1. Go to http://audioboo.fm and click on the “sign up” area of the sign up/log in link.

Figure 1

#2. Fill in the three fields accordingly as shown in Figure 2 below. Check the Terms of
Service box and, finally, the Join Audioboo box. You will be led to your Audioboo profile
page.

Figure 2

Side Note: If you choose to have students participate in podcasting within your course, you
and your students will go through the same procedure to get an account, create and embed
podcasts in ANGEL.
Creating a podcast
#1. Now that you are at your account homepage click on the my profile box.

Figure 3

#2 After clicking the my profile box, click on the pink button shown below to start recording…

Figure 4

If you click on the pink button the following window prompt will appear (Figure 5), letting you
choose to record or upload an audio file you may have already created. Choose from one or
the other.
Figure 5

Recording a Podcast:

In this window (Figure 6), the Start Recording button can also be pressed again during
recording to pause and resume if need be. You also can preview the recording, restart, add a
title if satisfied, then click SAVE. After it saves to your profile you will find your most recent
recording as marked in Figure 7.

To be led to the area shown in Figure 8, click on the podcast title (in this case the words “Test
number 2”)

Embedding your podcast in ANGEL

Please note: Before you begin this step, make sure you have two web browser windows
open. One of the windows will have your ANGEL course and the other window will be at your
audioBoo account.

#1 Once having created a podcast and saved it in http://audioboo.fm, open your recording in
audioboo.fm and click on “embed.”
Figure 8

#2 The following window with the HTML code will appear…

Figure 9
# 3 No need to worry about what this gobbledygook HTML code means! Copy the HTML
code above by highlighting ALL of the code from this “Embed code for...” box and press Copy
(Ctrl + C)

# 4 Now, go to Settings in the course content area where you want to put the podcast in and
click the button on your rich
text editor, known as the Source button (circled below).

Figure 10

#5 Now, pressing Ctrl +V (Paste) in this Source code box will add the code. Don’t worry that it
will look like the illustration in Figure 11.

Figure 11

#6 After adding the code, click the Source button again and click “SAVE”

Finally, when students view the page it will look like the picture below...
Each student just clicks the “play” button to listen.
