- 2. DEFINITION OF AUDIO OUTPUT DEVICES Audio output devices are the components that produce voice, music and other audible sounds. The most commonly used audio output devices are : Speakers Headphones Headset earbuds
- 3. SPEAKERS Speaker is the most common type of audio output device. It connects to a sound card on the motherboard in the system unit. It produce soft copy output in the form of voice. It provides audio output for the computer games, music, video clips and other applications. The speakers for some desktop computers are build directly in to the monitor. Portable computers and mobile devices typically have speakers integrated into the device. Speakers are available in different shape and size.
- 4. HEADPHONES It can be used instead of speakers so that other people are not disturb at places such as public library. The headphones are placed outside of the ear.
- 5. HEADSET Headset is a headphone with a build-in microphone. It is often used when making telephone calls or participating in web conference using computer. Wireless headsets are commonly used with mobile phones.
- 6. EARBUDS They are often use with portable digital media players, handheld gaming devices and other mobile devices. The earbuds are placed inside the ear. Both headphones and earbuds usually include noise-cancelling technology to reduce interference of sounds from surrounding environments.
- 7. COMBINED INPUT / OUTPUT DEVICES Many devices combine both input and output devices. This combination saves space and also helps in specialized applications. Some important combined input / output devices are as follows. Facsimile fax machine Internet telephone Multifunction device Terminals
- 8. Facsimile Fax Machine Facsimile fax machine transmits and receives documents over telephone lines. The document may contain text, images or hand- written contents. Fax machine at sending side scans the documents. It converts it into digital form and then transmits. The fax machine at receiving side converts this digital form into its original form and prints it.
- 9. TYPES OF FAX MACHINE 1) DEDICATED FAX MACHINE It is a normal fax machine. It can send information to another fax machine. It can also receives information from another fax machine. 2) FAX MACHINE it is circuit board inside the system unit. It can send and receive information to and from an other computer. It can also send information to a fax machine.
- 10. INTERNET TELEPHONE Internet telephone is also called telephony or internet telephony. It uses the internet to connect two or more people via telephone. The communication requires internet telephone, internet, a special service provider, a sound card and special software. The user can make long distance telephone calls very inexpensively. Internet telephone connections are rapidly becoming popular.
- 11. MULTIFUNCTION DEVICE It is a device that provides the functionality of a printer, scanner, copy machine and fax machine . These device also called multifunction peripherals (MFPs) or all- in one devices. These devices are commonly used in offices to provide all facilities.
- 12. ADVANTAGES OF MULTIFUNCTION DEVICE It occupies less space. It is less expensive than using multiple machines.
- 13. DISADVANTAGES OF MULTIFUNCTION DEVICE Disadvantages is that quality and functionality is not as good as separate single-purpose device
- 14. TERMINALS Terminals is a device that performs input and output it consist of monitor, keyboard and a video card. Different types of terminals are as follows: Dumb terminal Intelligent terminal Special- purpose terminal
- 15. Dumb terminal It has no processing power and can not function as independent device. It can enter and transmit data to a computer to which it is connected. Dumb terminal is normally connected to a host computer. Host computer performs the processing and then sends the output back to dumb terminal. Such terminal may be used by airline reservations clerk to access mainframe computer for flight information.
- 16. Intelligent terminal intelligent terminal also contain memory and a processor to perform some functions independent of the host computer. It is also called programmable terminal. It does not have its own storage capacity. Intelligent terminals are often used in local area networks in an office. The user shares application software and data store on a server.
- 17. SPECIAL-PURPOSE TERMINAL It performs specific tasks it design for use in a particular industry. Two examples are Point-of-scale terminal (POS) Automated teller machines (ATM)
- 18. Point-of-scale terminal (POS) It records purchases when the consumers purchase a product or service. It is used in grocery stores etc.
- 19. AUTOMATED TELLER MACHINE (ATM) It is a self-service banking machine. It connects to a host computer through a network. The user inserts a plastic bank card with a magnetic strip into the ATM and enters the password. The password is also called identification number (PIN). It is used to access the bank account.
