Task 2: Initial Responses
Initial Responses and Idea Generation
Log your initial thoughts regarding the set brief in this document
What stories could you use? How do you feel about the different potential
formats? What are the positives about this project? What could be some difficult
aspects? Etc
Use the format on this document to guide this response – some are set as a
question on one slide, but you should look to add further slides as necessary
Which stories have you researched and looked
as potential starting points?
• I have listened to several podcasts on a range of platforms to get some
ideas and to get the idea of what makes a good ghost story podcast. This
included ‘Real Ghost Stories Online’ on Spotify. This allowed me to get an
idea as to what types of stories there are and found out how to tell the
stories to make them interesting, how to change my voice and how certain
sound and voice effects can add a lot of difference and tension to the
podcast. This has made me think ahead and think about how I can
potentially start. This has made me want to do more research as to what
story I could tell, how I can tell it and who could be involved.
Which research into existing products has been the
most useful? Includes examples and explanations
• Real Ghost Stories online as it gave me an idea of how to make the story
sound dramatic and gave me ideas of what ghost stories are interesting and
what isn’t, how to make it more realistic and how to add sound effects and
music to make certain parts more dramatic and adds action to the story.
Which production format [drama, narration,
etc] do you feel fits your idea best and why?
• Narration best fits my idea as I want the story to be a mix of both narration
and interview with the person ‘involved’ with the story with added sound
effects and background music. However, the drama style podcasts helped
me with sound effects and watching a behind the scenes of foley sounds
helped me figure out how to create different sounds for the podcast.
Which story have you settled on and why?
• I have settled on the idea of basing the story from a real experience that I
personally had. The story includes me walking up the stairs at my
grandparents house one night when I was alone, to the sound a young girl
giggling softly and the sound of light footsteps skipping across the room. I
then walk up the stairs and look into my grandparents room which the
door had just slowly opened, I look into the mirror of the wardrobe at the
other side of the room, showing the reflection of the bed. Sat on the end of
the bed was a little girl, 4 years old, holding a small little rabbit teddy. I
asked my grandparents later that night and found out that the girl I had
saw was lucy, she died in that house years before they had moved in and
that night was the anniversary of her death.
If you had to sell your story quickly, what is the
title and the logline?
• Title- The girl and her bunny
• Logline- The appearance of 4 year old Lucy, on the anniversary of her
death.
What ideas have you had for sound effects,
narration and storytelling?
• The sound of faint giggling when explaining about hearing the giggling,
light footsteps across a carpet and faint music for the background sound
when the story is being told.
Initial feelings…how do you feel about the
project currently?
• I am excited and feeling very confidence for this project as it is the closest
experience I get as part of the course to radio, which is what I am working
towards as my final job. I am feeling confident about what I need to do and
how I am going to do it. However I am worried about the narration itself as
it will be the first time of me doing something like this but I am hoping that
this experience will help prepare me for the future on radio.
What other research do you think you need to
do?
• I need to research more about foley sounds and how to create certain
sound effects. I also need to listen to more podcasts to get an idea of how I
can edit it to make it more exciting and interesting and spooky. I also need
to do some research into voice effects and voice acting to be able to
narrate the project.

Editor's Notes

  • #3: Think about creative and technical elements, it could be you like the idea of evoking a sense of place or you have the perfect person in mind as a narrator? Or are you keen to start writing a story and take it from there? Ideas and development are personal, try and get across where your idea is and what has got you to that point.
  • #4: Add as many slides as needed from the work you did on Urban Legends, York Ghost stories and other inspirations you have considered. Which story have you gravitated toward and why?
  • #7: Think about why this idea rather than any other…is it because it has the best scope for sfx, narration, etc. Reasons can be personal, but you need explain them.
  • #8: A logline is a one sentence description or summary of the audio story. Loglines distill the important elements of your script/story—main character, setup, central conflict, antagonist—into a clear, concise teaser. The goal is to write a logline so enticing that it hooks the listener into your idea
  • #9: Think about creative and technical elements here, it could be you like the idea of evoking a sense of place or you have the perfect person in mind as a narrator? • #10: Consider pros and cons here, what are you excited about, what is a worry…
  • #11: This could be audio recording, post-production, getting cast/narrator, etc…it might be just organising your idea into a workable project…
