In charge of school Knows best Ultimate authority Cultures - perception about teachers
It is common for some students not to make eye contact with adults as it may be seen as a sign of disrespect.
Be careful to use correct grammar. Speak clearly. Avoid speaking too fast. Techniques for Interaction
Aggressive Behavior Talks out in class. Impulsive behavior Talks back to the teacher Does not follow class rules Possible Effects of Acculturation
Peer tutoring and mentoring can be an effective tool for the immigrant and refugee students . Visuals, Gestures, Action or Acting Out Repetition works well (Repetition with meaning - if no meaning, can do more harm than good) Be Slow and Distinct Learners and Learning Styles
Basic student needs … Academic language is like a third language to them – be aware of this. They take things very literally, do not catch idioms, metaphors etc. Giving them more time is an appropriate accommodation. Repetition is a must to help understand. They need to know exactly what is expected. (Assume nothing). If you give them a hand out – instruct them to keep it – they will not automatically do this. Almost 90% of what they get from you is nonverbal – so … Be conscious of your facial expressions. They see everything! Write things on the board, make it visual, hands on. Abbreviations are difficult to understand – write it out.
Advantages of Bilingual Education … Students do better when they are encouraged to maintain and develop their first language.   Students who are literate in their native language can transfer that skill and learn more quickly in English In today’s global economy, bilingualism and multilingualism are valuable skills . Students will learn English more effectively and won’t lag as far behind their English-speaking classmates when their parents assist in building literacy skills by reading at home with their children.
Teaching Techniques Pairs and small groups are the optimum formation for learning. Avoid the questions: “ Do you understand?” “ Yes/No? ” Use “ Tell me more.” “ Why do you think so?” “ What does this remind you of?” “ What connections can you make?”
Confused in terms of time. Poor living skills. Extreme social withdrawal. Poor interpersonal relationships . Behavioral Concerns

Editor's Notes

  • #5: With globalization and movement, we have many immigrant and refugees in the United States speaking various different languages, coming virtually from every corner of the planet with diverse outlooks, cultural beliefs, behaviours and background experiences. Teachers need to provide language and literary skills to survive in school and later in jobs
