They take things very literally, do not catch idioms, metaphors etc. Giving them more time is an appropriate accommodation. Repetition is a must to help understand. They need to know exactly what is expected. (Assume nothing). If you give them a hand out – instruct them to keep it – they will not automatically do this. Almost 90% of what they get from you is nonverbal – so … Be conscious of your facial expressions. They see everything! Write things on the board, make it visual, hands on. Abbreviations are difficult to understand – write it out.
