INDIVIDUAL EXERCISE
Think of examples of people that you respect
and truly look up to of the following categories:
– A man and a woman you know personally
– Celebrities - a woman and a man
– A male and a female leader you’ve personally had
– Historic leaders - a woman and a man

INDIVIDUAL EXERCISE continued
After you complete the list, look at it again and
reflect upon it.
What do these qualities tell you about yourself
and the leader you would like to be?

LEADING SELF
“Leading Self requires from you to find personal
fulfilment by uncovering, and exploring your
authentic self, thereby fulfilling your potential and
becoming all you can become. This requires you to
establish an intimate understanding of who you
are, how you operate, what is important to you, and
most importantly, what you need to do to find
fulfilment in your life.”
― Richard Barrett, The New Leadership Paradigm

AUTHENTIC LEADERSHIP
• “I believe that leadership begins and ends with
authenticity. It’s being yourself; being the person you
were created to be.”
• “Leadership is the sum total of who you are. Leaders
are developed not simply born and we can all
develop ourselves to be able to guide others. Anyone
who follows their internal compass can become an
authentic leader.”
― Bill George, True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership

research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement No 643330

AUTHENTIC LEADERSHIP-continued
• “Authentic leaders are not born that way. “
• “Leadership is a journey, not a destination. It is a
marathon, not a sprint. It is a process, not an outcome.”
• “Authentic leaders are dedicated to developing
themselves because they know that becoming a leader
takes a lifetime of personal growth. ”
• “The hardest person you will ever have to lead is
yourself.”
― Bill George, True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for
research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement No 643330

AUTHENTIC LEADERSHIP-continued
• “Authentic leaders use their natural abilities, but they also
recognize their shortcomings and work hard to overcome
them.
• They lead with purpose, meaning, and values.
• They build enduring relationships with people.
• Others follow them because they know where they stand.
• They are consistent and self-disciplined. When their
principles are tested, they refuse to compromise.”
― Bill George, True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership

research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement No 643330

AUTHENTIC LEADERSHIP-continued
• “Leaders need not be some super-humans, vice versa,
they must recognize their strengths and weaknesses and
“learn to lead by reflecting honestly on their experiences,
in particular, on their failures“ (O'Toole, 2008).
• “Leaders understand that “exposing a weakness
establishes trust... Indeed, if executives try to
communicate that they're perfect at everything, there will
be no need for anyone to help them with anything. They
won't need followers.” (Coffee & Jones, 2000)
• “Only when leaders come to see themselves as
incomplete–as having both strengths and weaknesses –
will they be able to make up for their missing skills by
relying on others”. (Ancona & Malone, 2007)

ORIGIN OF THE WORD
“The root word of ‘leadership’ is ‘leith’, which
means to cross the threshold, to let go of old
ways, mind-sets and logic in order to embrace
the new.”

AUTHENTICITY EVERY CHOICE
EVERY DAY
“Leadership is not about epic decisions. It is
about the choices we make in our daily lives.”
