Autobiography Writing about self “I see but one rule: to be clear…” Stendhal
A Chapter of Your Life Telling stories about key events in your life and describing people who played important roles can be a dynamic learning experience.
Engage Evoking a vivid impression means using showing techniques.
Revisit your Past Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and other sensations of memory.
The Meaning of Your Experience Understanding and stating the meaning of your experience is an important part of writing a quality Autobiography. Think deeply about the significance to you and the outside world and state it.
Reading Peer’s Essays As you read and give feedback to your peer’s essay, you learn to deepen your knowledge of each genre. Notice similarities and differences. Differences can be far more thought-provoking than similarities.
A Public Experience Remember, that writing an autobiography is a public experience, not a private one. Choose a topic you are comfortable sharing. Do not write unwanted self-disclosures.
Writers Reveal Remember, each thing you write reveals something else about you—to yourself and to your readers. After writing, always ask yourself: What have I learned about myself in writing this piece and going through this process?
Fashioning Self Writers create ‘self’ with their words. It can be a very powerful experience. Think about how you want to portray yourself.
A fine focus The best Autobiographies will focus on a single event or individual. You will both narrate your story and use specific details to engage your reader.
Purpose Through a careful choice of words and details, convey the meaning and importance in your life—the autobiographical significance—of this event or person.
Text Models: Using Reader Response Theory Use the models in your textbook to empower your writing skills. Learning to read as a writer is important. Answer all 3 Questions of Reader Response Theory, noting what makes the essays work or not work for you.
And remember this quote… “ Words are to be taken seriously…Words set things in motion.” … Toni Cade Bambara.
