This document summarizes two studies that investigated the accuracy and usefulness of feedback from the automated writing evaluation tool Criterion. The first study assessed the accuracy of Criterion's feedback across different error types in student writing. The second study examined how well students were able to use Criterion's feedback to correctly revise their writing. The findings provide evidence to inform discussions about integrating automated writing evaluation into writing classrooms and also raise questions about Criterion's approach to accuracy and instructor assumptions about the purpose of activities using automated feedback.
