Automation
Introduction Automation is a technique of making an apparatus, a
process, or a system operate automatically.
 The creation and application of technology to monitor
and control the production and delivery of products and
services.
 IT automation is the linking of disparate systems and
software in such a way that they become self-acting or
self-regulating.
 Automation concept came into picture to reduce the
dependency on human beings who tend to commit
mistakes,
 Automations speeds up the process as everything is
mechanized and provides reliability and consistency of
output.
 Without automation systems, cost-efficient operation of
today’s plants would be inconceivable.
 TYPES OF AUTOMATION:-
 Fixed automation
 Programmable automation
 Fixed automation :
 Refers to an automated production facility in which
the sequence of processing operations is fixed by the
equipment configuration.
 characterized by high initial investment and high
production rates
 suitable for products that are made in large volumes.
Eg: automatic assembly machines
 Programmable automation :
 The products are made in batch quantities. For each new
batch, the production equipment must be reprogrammed and
changed over to accommodate the new product style.
 Production rates in programmable automation are generally
lower than in fixed automation Eg: A numerical-control
machine tool
 Flexible automation:
 extension of programmable automation
 the variety of products is sufficiently limited so that the
changeover of the equipment can be done very quickly and
automatically.
 reprogramming of the equipment is done off-line
 no need to group identical products into batches; instead, a
mixture of different products can be produced one right after
Trends
 Scientists are using artificial vision technology to
detect rotten oranges, and sort citrus fruit by
quality
 The food retail industry has started to apply
automation to the ordering process; McDonald's
has introduced touch screen ordering and payment
systems in many of its restaurants, reducing the
need for as many cashier employees.
 Self checkout systems reducing the need for
employing checkout workers.
 Automated video surveillance
 Automated waste collection trucks prevent the
need for as many workers as well as easing the
level of labor required to provide the service
 Home Automation
Future Trends
 Artificial intelligence and home automation have better scope for the
next five years.
 Human Computer interface using AI can be another field for future
scope.
 Intelligent Transport System : As demands for safety and mobility
have grown this field has a good future scope in long term.
Interest Areas
 Artificial intelligence : Robotics.
 Automated vehicles, There is a need to develop vehicles which can
drive on their own so that human mistakes while driving can be
avoided using sensors and GPS tracking for communication
between vehicles.
 If given an internship in this area, I woluld intend to work on any of
the current fields of research in the field of automation undertaken
by firm for betterment of the society
Thank you
