POSTER DESIGN EVOLUTION
• Topic: Kahn Consulting web design services
• Goal: Advertise web design services and generate gigs
• Audience: Small schools/colleges and non-profits in
need of web design services
• Message: You need a website. I’m the best person to
design and build it for you.
Week 1: Initial Design
Week 4: Redesign & Imagery
WEEK 4 CHANGES
After my initial design, I made some sweeping changes
to get my design more in-line with my message visually.
• Changed orientation to landscape
• Created my own graphic in Illustrator
• Used a more interesting, “cooler” color scheme
• Fonts are Montserrat (titles) and Futura (body)
Week 6: Proximity, Alignment,
Contrast, Repetition
WEEK 6 CHANGES
By this time I was starting to learn and incorporate more features of
good design – the design should be lower effort than before. Changes:
• Graphic expanded with repeating elements
• Title moved into graphic to improve proximity of visuals and title
• Second subhead added to chunk information
• Subtitles larger, less text
• Body text smaller, lighter, and different font used to increase contrast with subtitles
• Alignment improved
• Fonts are Montserrat (titles) and Raleway Light (body). I also tried an Old style, Georgia, in the body
but prefer this font.
Week 7: Color & Style
WEEK 7 CHANGES
• This week saw a focus on color and style. I wanted the style to be
professional but approachable and modern. Changes:
• Use of a monochromatic purple color scheme.
• Graphic and title enlarged. Title changed to white to contrast.
• Subtitle banners expanded to full side-panel.
• Text expanded to improve message
• Company logo added.
• Email address modified and “email” label removed
• Fonts are Montserrat (titles) and Raleway Light (body).
Week 7: Type
& Taking Chances
WEEK 8 CHANGES
In week 8, we worked with typography, and Dr. Bucy challenged
us to try some radically different approaches after weeks of
iterating. Changes:
• New vertical design
• Modern-ish serif font used for title: Playfair Display Bold (subtitle: Playfair Display
regular)
• Sans serif used for body: Rubik
• New stock photo graphic, enhances message (suggests target audience, using
technology, busy)
• Left is original, right is further improved after feedback by creating more contrast
between subhead and body (Playfair Display Black Italic, Rubik Light).
Week 8: Getting Closer
ANOTHER WEEK 8 DESIGN
This design ended up being the basis for my final design. I
focused on creating a bold design using contrasting fonts
and color.
• Title font is Roboto. Subheads are Zilla Slab Hightlight.
Body is Zilla Slab.
• A single bold orange is used along with black and white.
• Message is distilled down to crucial elements and uses
some concrete/action words.
• A different stock photo is used; I desaturated the photo.
