Tabulation of Data
Dr. Aswartha Harinatha Reddy
Department of Life Sciences
Tabulation:
 The process of placing classified data into tabular form is
known as tabulation.
 A table is a symmetric arrangement of statistical data in rows
and columns.
 Rows are horizontal arrangements whereas columns are
vertical arrangements.
 Tabular presentation is the process of condensation of
the data for convenience in statistical processing,
presentation and interpretation of the information.
Objectives and importance of Data Tabulation
 To carry out investigations
 To do comparisons
 To locate omissions and errors in the data
 To use space economically
 To study the trends
 To simplify data
 Interpretation (Arrangement of data in meaningful form)

Methods of Tabulation
Simple tabulation:
 Simple tabulation also known as one-way table.
 Simple tabulation is when the data are tabulated to one
characteristic. (Tabulated data contain only one character).
 For example: the survey that determined the number of
employees of a company using different brands of mobile
phones like Blackberry, Nokia, I phone, etc.
Brands of mobile phones Number of employees
Blackberry 50
Nokia 70
I phone 90
Total 210
Table1: Simple tabulation
Double tabulation:
 Double tabulation also known as two-way table.
 Double tabulation is when two characteristics of data
are tabulated.
 For example: number of male and female employees
in the company using different brand of mobile
phones like Blackberry, Nokia, Iphone, etc.
Number of
employees
Numbers of User

Girls Boys
Blackberry 20 30 50
Nokia 30 40 70
I phone 35 55 90
Total 85 125 210
Table 2: Double tabulation
Complex tabulation:
 Complex tabulation of data that includes more than two
characteristics.
 For example: number of male (Age 22-24 and 24-32),
female (Age 22-24 and 24-32), in the company using
different brand of mobile phones like Blackberry, Nokia,
Iphone, etc.
