Blackboard is Getting an Upgrade

Johnston Community College is upgrading its Blackboard system from the outdated Learn 2012 to the Ultra Base Navigation (UBN) to improve mobile accessibility and user experience. Key features of UBN include a modern left-hand menu, a comprehensive activity stream, and enhanced communication options through the messages tool. The upgrade process will begin overnight on May 9th, with a testing phase and the aim to be ready for summer classes starting May 16th.

Click to edit Master title style 2 Why? • Currently running Learn 2012. • It does not support mobile web browsers and has accessibility issues. • Support for Learn 2012 ended in 2021 and could be removed at any point, moving us to Learn 2016. • Legacy Navigation, in general, will no longer be supported after July 31, 2024. 2

Click to edit Master title style 3 Where are we going? 3 • We are upgrading to Ultra Base Navigation (UBN) with Original Course View • The Base Navigation is the left-hand menu you see when logging in to Blackboard outside of courses. • It provides you with links to help and other resources, updates on your courses, and an easy way to access your courses and organizations. • The UBN has a modern and simple layout that is designed to re-size on mobile devices and improves the accessibility of Blackboard.

- 8. Click to edit Master title style 8 Courses 8 With either view, easily open the course for students, hide the course from your view, and mark favorites. More Options Set Favorite The image shown is either the banner image, randomly generated, or chosen in the more options menu.

- 10. Click to edit Master title style 10 Tabs and Modules 10 The tabs and modules that were located on the JCC Online and MyJCC page will be moved to the Institution page in UBN. The content shown will be targeted based on the user’s role in Blackboard – Student or Faculty/Staff. NEW OLD
- 11. Click to edit Master title style 11 Assist 11 Additional information will be available in the Assist Area. This is available in Legacy Blackboard but harder to find. NEW OLD

Click to edit Master title style 12 Activity Stream 12 A new feature called the Activity Stream will allow instructors and students to see what’s new in their courses by providing a bird’s eye view. Institutional notifications can also be created in the activity stream to communicate with all Blackboard users. Students and faculty can click on an item in their activity stream, and that item will open with direct access and notifications will provide additional details.
- 13. Click to edit Master title style 13 Calendar 13 From the global calendar, you can see all your upcoming due dates and meetings across your courses—all in one place. Due dates appear automatically when set in assignments. Office Hours can be set up per course or for all courses at once. Student View Instructor View If a student clicks on an assignment, it takes them to submit the assignment. If an instructor does, it takes them to edit it. Instructors can also drag and drop the assignment to change the due date/time.
- 14. Click to edit Master title style 14 Email vs. Messages 14 Email The email tool, within individual courses, sends emails to Blackboard users’ email accounts. Because the emails are outside the Blackboard domain, all emails and their contents are not stored in the course. Users can read and reply using their JCC email account. From a Blackboard course, emails cannot be sent to a person who is not enrolled in the course. In Blackboard, the email tool offers options for sending communications to different groups.
- 15. Click to edit Master title style 15 Email vs. Messages 15 Messages The Messages tool in UBN will allow you to see an overview of the messages in all your courses. It allows students and instructors to communicate by sending and receiving messages within Blackboard only. Users can send private messages to instructors, teaching assistants, or peers.

Users can also save drafts of messages, and there is an inbox and sent box. A number count will highlight any new messages received whenever a student or instructor logs into Blackboard.

- #2: Background about me: Started out teaching graphic design at Wake Tech many years ago and did so for 10 years. I have taught with and/or been an administrator for Blackboard, Moodle, and Canvas Since teaching, I have served as a faculty trainer, Director of Online Learning, Distance Learning Coordinator, eLearning Director, and now to get back closer to family, LMS Administrator. Having these roles have provided me with an opportunity to use the different LMS’s as an instructor but also to dig into them in an effort to solve problems instructors have. I understand that when teaching, you are generally looking for the quickest, usually most obvious way to complete a task. I have had the opportunity to do a deep-dive and have found hidden ways that can often make life easier, if you only knew about them. I’m always happy to share my secrets.
